New Install, some issues

Just installed TrueNAS on a Dell R640 with 8 x 8TB SSD drives.

I'm in the web interface and having some hiccups.

Version: TrueNAS-13.0-U5.2

STORAGE
All 8 drives show up (albeit as 7.28TB) in storage > disks

Trying to create a new pool (I assume this is mandatory), but no available disks show up in storage > pools > create pool

NEW USERS
Can't create new user, getting error:

The path for the home directory "(/mnt/someuser)" must include a volume or dataset.

I can't find any option for "Show disk with non-unique serial numbers" which I saw in another post.

SYSTEM UPDATE
In sytem > update I get this error

: Automatic update check failed. Please check system network settings.

I can reach the update server using below command:
nslookup update-master.ixsystems.com

SSL
Any way to install LetsEncrypt SSL for the web GUI?

2FA
Enabled 2FA with DuoMobile app and confirmed TrueNAS system time is accurate. Never works when I log out, back in. Login form adds 2FA field, but it always tells me it's incorrect. I tried 3 times. I had to run the below command a few times and try again, no go.

midclt call auth.twofactor.update '{"enabled": false}'

Did you install your TrueNAS to all the 8 disks? You are aware that you need separate drives for the TrueNAS installation and boot and for the storage pool?

Honestly was not aware of that, I’m used to using FreeNAS using USB boot. So I need one drive specific for TrueNAS installation boot, and the rest 8 would be the pool is create after? I read the docs but may have overlooked something.

Exactly. One or two boot drives (mirrored boot) and the rest for storage. People frequently pick small cheap consumer SSDs for boot - 100-200 GB or so. In a corporate environment where budget might be less of an issue, SATA-DOMs are also popular (at least they are in my company). USB is discouraged now, because thumb drives wear out way too fast. If you do not have enough ports and are tight on the budget, a consumer SATA SSD with a USB-SATA adapter is still preferable to a thumb drive.

Yes, but it isn't super-easy. See:

As to the issues with checking for updates and 2FA, are you certain the date and time are correct, and that the system (i.e., BIOS) clock is set to UTC?

I reinstalled it to a dedicated 250GB SSD. This time, when I try to create a pool, the only disk that shows up is that 250GB, the other 8 x 8TB do not show up. They however do show up in storage > disks area, all 8. Not sure why this is giving me a hard time, but your help appreciated.

What type of controller are these disks connected to? You cannot use a RAID controller.

I have a Dell R640 with Dell HBA330 Mini (Embedded) controller.

However, in Lifecycle Controller area when I select "configure RAID" I get the below error, despite rebooting (power cycle) a few times.

Did you flash the controller to IT firmware?

I don't know but I do know that you cannot use a RAID controller for storage with TrueNAS.

You need to find out if your controller can be converted into an HBA and if not, replace it.

If this thing is a true HBA already, that would explain why you cannot invoke the RAID setup. Then we need to check if it is supported by TrueNAS at all. What's the output of camcontrol devlist?

Can you see them under Storage > Disks? If yes, use "wipe" to delete the remnants of your first installation attempt. You should then be able to create a pool from them.

Yes, but only the small 250GB SSD drive I installed TN to is showing up in the create pool section.

Ah ... you booted from your old installation that contains all 8 disks in an 8-way mirror. So they are busy because they contain the boot pool.

I suggest booting from some live system - FreeBSD, Linux, whatever you feel comfortable with - and wipe them. If you use FreeBSD, you could use e.g. zpool labelclear and gpart destroy to clean them.

The HBA330 is a LSI SAS HBA based on the 3008 chip--here's the output of sas3flash -listall on my R630 with the HBA330:
