What about reiserfs? Can this be mounted instead?
or.. to what file system can I convert my external drives (which I plan to encrypt anyways) so that they can be compatible for both reads and write on FreeNAS? All my other computers are running Linux (Arch Linux).
For the most compatibility with freenas, it's recommended to use filesystems native to freenas. So either UFS or ZFS. All other supported filesystems are primarily there for data migration purposes, and not meant to be used read / write.
