Anyone use the M4A78LT-M LE feature to unlock cores on the CPU?

Most importantly are there any 'bad' side effects from doing this?

I´ve done this on a Asrock Board with a Phenom II X3 and Windows 7 to get a quad-core.
If your board has ACC, just try it it out if it works or not, with some CPUs it works but not with all. I´ve tested mine with prime95 during 2 days with no problem so I was sure that it works, if it don´t work you will get a blue-screen or other errors.
If this is your freenas box, I would recommend to disconnect the HDDs first and use an old HDD with windows for example to start some benchmarks or CPU tests to be sure to not lost your data. If it works you will get more CPU cores for your FN box.

Tried that with a Phenom II X3 also with the same board, my particular situation didn't produced good results. Many kernel panics.

But it varies on every processor, its hit and miss

The core is disabled for a reason, the manufacture deemed it did not meet their quality standards. Enabling it may result in no issues or it could result in major issues. The worst case is there is a tiny defect that only crops up every few months and causes all kinds of headaches down the road.

Not all X3 have a broken core, some of them are X4 with one core disabled for commercial reasons. Thats the reason why to test first few days with burnin test.
OK, I use it for my gaming PC and not for my NAS so if it crashs one day it is not so important but I haven´t any issue since 6 months.
