Logging in general

When someone like me is learning a new system and has a problem, I start by looking at the logs:

• Console messages
• /var/log/debug.log
• /var/log/messages

Is there anywhere else I can look to diagnose problems? Can I turn up the logging level?

Under System | Advanced you can enable the debug kernel.

On the same tab you can click Save Debug to dump a whole heap of logs, configuration info and such. Note that it can take many minutes to deliver, which may lead you to think that the task has failed.
