so I have replication setup successfully going from freenas box to freenas box.

My question is though, for a bit of extra security, should I delete all the shares and turn off all service except SMART and SSH because I will not be accessing the backup freenas box?

Is messing with these settings going to somehow mess with the replication or create problems further down the road if I have to restore from the backup machine?

Thanks for the input!

You need SSH running, since that is what replication uses.

Your backup box doesn't need to have any shares configured. Replication doesn't do that. If you made them manually, yes, they can be removed.

Make sure you have configuration backups (there are some scripts to automate the backup).
