I have a pool that has been in use since FreeNAS version 8.

When I upgraded over the years, I didn't know when it was safe to delete the old directory, and I had lots of space, so I just let it be.

If I understand correctly /POOL/jails is obsolete and can be deleted, and /POOL/iocage is the current directory. Can I safely delete /POOL/jails?

If you're no longer running warden jails (and you can't really be if you're on TrueNAS), then yes.

Make sure any data that leaked into the old jails' root filesystems is accounted for first.
