So first I got:
Code:
Oct. 29, 2018, 2:04 p.m. - Device: /dev/da2 [SAT], Self-Test Log error count increased from 2 to 3

So I then ran a smartctl test and got the following results:

Code:
=== START OF OFFLINE IMMEDIATE AND SELF-TEST SECTION ===
Sending command: "Execute SMART Extended self-test routine immediately in off-line mode".
Drive command "Execute SMART Extended self-test routine immediately in off-line mode" successful.
Testing has begun.
Please wait 709 minutes for test to complete.
Test will complete after Tue Oct 30 11:00:06 2018

Use smartctl -X to abort test.
root@thing:~ # smartctl -A /dev/da2

is it the drive or do I need to talk my family through swapping the SATA cable first?

Code:
200 Multi_Zone_Error_Rate ---R-- 200 200 000	-	224

You have a problem with the disk.
Code:
UDMA_CRC_Error_Count	0x0032 200 200 000	Old_age Always - 0

Cable's fine.
PS Maybe die disk heads.

If SMART is telling you you have read errors:
1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate 0x002f 200 199 051 Pre-fail Always - 15

Then it can only be the disk... SMART is run by the disk on the disk, so eliminates cabling and ports.

Oct. 29, 2018, 2:04 p.m. - Device: /dev/da2 [SAT], Self-Test Log error count increased from 2 to 3
That is all you should have needed to see.

# 1 Short offline Completed: read failure 10% 32904 7257864096
# 2 Extended offline Completed: read failure 40% 32893 7257613976
In addition to what's already been pointed out, these also point to the disk.

And confirmed to be disk. I had a hotspare swap in automatically and over thanksgiving I'll pull the dead drive for warranty repair.
