I have snapshots of the form "recv-NNNN-NN", what do these refer to?

I replicated a pool using zfs send | recv. Afterwards Ive found a lot of snapshots that look like working copies that should have been deleted, titled "recv-NNNN-N" or "recv-NNNN-NN".

What are these, and how do they come to have been persisted in my backup pool?
