Hi All,
I'm setting up FreeNAS storage for testing
specs are: latest FreeNAS 9.10.2-U4, using NFSv3, Ubuntu linux clients, OpenLDAP.

I created a dataset and I'd like allow only to root user to create files/directories under it. (in other words, block regular users from creating files at root level)
while offcourse users will be allowed to create files in directories they do have linux permissions to...

How can that be achieved

Do you mean that you create the root-level folders which users will have access to write files in? In that case you can simply use the BSD access rights to only allow root (or your own admin user) write permissions in the root level whereas you can set more permissive access rights for the subfolders
