I will start by saying I know nothing about servers. I hear there are many benefits to owning a home server and by doing some research FreeNAS seems to be the way to go! Another thing is if I use this it would be on a I2500K system I have collecting dust.. So as a complete noobie I guess there is a ton of reading and learning to do! Wish me luck :)

Welcome.

Make sure you have at least the minimum RAM recommended (8gb) before starting this endeavor.

The System has that much.. Also I have a HTPC that has 16 gigs I could always swap .. As it is only used for movies and music I don't need that much memory in it..

I moved away from full blown HTPCs years ago.

I run raspberry pi 3's on all the TV's, running rasplex on them. Htpc life has been good.

Most of the computers I have were built for gaming. As is the one I would like to turn into a server. I guess I am just a PC fan and enjoy to tinker with them. I do see many people going to the smaller systems tho for movies and music. But seeing I have this stuff on hand I would like to make use of it :) The system I want to turn into a server was my first gaming pc. And since I am no longer using it I thought this might be a good idea.. I am new to the world of servers and know nothing about them so I have much to learn.

Be wary of using gaming parts for a FreeNAS build. Realtek NICs are terrible, audio hardware is unusable, GPUs are useless, and make sure you don't use any kind of "motherboard assisted RAID" on the drives. Throw them in ahci mode and FreeNAS should see them.

A lot of people will harp on the system not supporting ECC RAM, but just know that ECC is a recommendation for a reason.

Good luck!

Well I guess that leaves me to look for hardware! The board is the Sabertooth p67. Not sure if this will work or not and as for raid it can be turned off. Is your advise not to try this? I would like to know as if it a waist of time I won't bother.. The gpu I know is no use to a server and audio hardware is not important anyway is it? I mean you would be streaming to a pc then to your audio equipment. I use a a few sound cards for my main pc's .

In my opinion, load it up and play around with it. If you decide you really like it, start looking into getting some proper server gear. A lot of us started this way.
