This is newly supported in ESXI 6.5 under Linux, however it looks like there is a FreeNAS incompatibility. It seems to work, setting the discard flag or running fstrim does indeed seem to free up most of the space all the way back to the storage server. However, it throws errors every time as well...
[ 155.964397] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] FAILED Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE
[ 155.964403] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Sense Key : Illegal Request [current]
[ 155.964410] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Add. Sense: Invalid field in parameter list
[ 155.964414] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] CDB: Unmap/Read sub-channel 42 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 18 00
[ 155.964418] blk_update_request: critical target error, dev sda, sector 18132992
[ 155.988823] XFS (dm-2): discard failed for extent [0x12,75731], error -5
It only seems to throw errors on only a dozen sectors tops even when removing a large file.
Its reported working on an EMC array.
I realize this is cutting edge stuff for FreeNAS but any insights on these errors or when they might be fixed would be appreciated. I'm assuming it is a FreeNAS incompatibility but seeing as it seems to actually work despite errors on a few sectors then a fix may not be very difficult.
I would open a bug report bug I never receive the email from the tracking system in order to register, seems to not even make it to my mail server.. unless its just tripping a lot of spam flags and being deleted. If anyone could help with that it would be appreciated as well.
Thanks!
