On a similar line of thinking, I was considering one of these

it offers four SATA ports (either all internal or two int/two ext). Googling around suggested that FreeBSD had problems with it a few years ago but eventually it worked okay.

Note that SATA controller cards for good old PCI probably will leave you with SATA 150 Mbps speeds only. This might or might not be ok for your use.
