Hi,

I'm Alex from France, I Would like ask u some questions concernant FreeNas and the hardware good to run it.

Concerning the hardware, is a 2 cores + 2Go of DDR3 with a fare motherboard ? I would like to have a "cheap" hardware for my NAS ...

Concerning FreeNas, is it able to work with french accents like "été" (summer in french) or like "bébé" (ie baby) ?

Moreover, is it able to do daily incrementale backup form HardDrive 1 to HardDrive 2 both in the computer/NAS ? Finally, is FreeNas able to crypt all data saved ?

Have a great day,

Regards.

FreeNAS does not care how much you had paid for your hardware.

On the other hand, ZFS cares that you use mirrors or RAID-Z* and the system uses ECC throughout.

Yes, you can use French accents for the file names and directories. However, the zpool name must begin with a letter, and can only contain alphanumeric characters as well as underscore ("_"), dash ("-"), and period ("."); no accented letters there.

Yes, FreeNAS supports disk encryption, though there's a correspondingly greater risk of losing your data that way. You should be able to accomplish a scheduled backup using the replication feature; the manual will describe how that works.

The hardware you suggest is completely inadequate--8 GB of RAM is the minimum, and ECC is strongly recommended.

@a_leex, please read carefully what danb35 wrote. FreeNAS would have entire disks encrypted, not just the data saved...

Thanks all !

So, I am thinking about this configuration :

ECC is really to expenssive for me ...

Well, if you dump the SSD that won't do anything for you, it will free up some money for things that are actually important (like a motherboard, CPU, and RAM that support ECC). ECC RAM itself is only slightly more expensive than non-ECC ram, the additional expense being primarily due to the extra RAM (it stores 9 bits/byte, rather than 8 bits in non-ECC RAM). The most common recommendations here are Intel CPUs on SuperMicro motherboards, and there's a reason for that--they work well and reliably, have features like IPMI that are useful for servers, and don't waste board space or money on things that don't matter (like onboard audio, advanced onboard video, etc.). If you're looking for a bare-bones AMD build, though, check out @joeschmuck's build (it's listed in his signature). It's relatively inexpensive, and it does support ECC.

Consider the total cost of your server, including drives, before deciding that the cost delta for ECC is too high.

Yeah, that system is barely better than the current one.

A 32€ motherboard is something I'd never trust. It's an unfair comparison. A good desktop board costs ~150€+ - just like a good server board!
I'd bet that that motherboard's GbE controller won't work with FreeNAS, to make it an even crappier deal.
You can get an Intel G3220 for only slightly more cash, too.
RAM won't be a lot more expensive.
The SSD is absolutely useless, so that frees up cash.
A better PSU would certainly be a very good idea, but it's your call.

The SSD is the FreeNAS OS, where do I put my OS if I dump it ?

Concerning, is it really usefull to have ECC as ZFS is suppose to check the data ?

Concerning the motherboard, this one is cheap because it's a previous model ... Concerning, Intel proc and supermicro motherboard, I have to give a look
Somebody knows a good configuration for around $200 ?

I am not looking for performance but more looking for a place to keep my data safe.

You really should RTFM, as it would save both you and us some time in answering these questions. See section 1.3.3 of the manual: "[FreeNAS] should not be installed onto a hard drive, but rather to a USB or compact flash device that is at least 2 GB in size." At least 4 GB is usually recommended, as flash drive manufacturers seem to overestimate the capacity of their devices.

For a cheap Intel/SuperMicro build, the best I can come up with is:

SuperMicro MBD-X10SLQ-O, $122.99 open box at Newegg.com
Intel Celeron G1840, $46.99 at newegg.com
Crucial CT102472BD1339 8GB ECC DIMM, $98.99 at newegg.com

You can get Kingston RAM for about $10 less, but they've had some shady dealings recently, making them hard to recommend.

Again, check out @joeschmuck's build for an inexpensive AMD configuration that supports ECC. It will probably cost less than this build. This is using a current-model motherboard and CPU, though. If you were so inclined, it would give you room to expand in the future (for at least a couple of years) up to a Xeon E3 processor.

Thanks for ur reply and the configuration suggested !

Concerning the build of joeschumck, why did he add the network adapter ? The one on the motherboard is not good ?

Thanks

You need to stop and read our manual and our stickies. You're being torn apart with feedback because you clearly haven't read our documentation. If you read our stickies and manual all of the feedback you've gotten would have been stuff you already should have known.
