The FreeNAS documentation (1.2.2) still refers to "compact flash" (sic) and doesn't mention Disk on Module (DOM). Perhaps it's time to update that section. It seems that most forum posters these days discuss the pros and cons of DOM vs. USB, with perhaps a few booting from SSD. But I don't think anyone is booting from CompactFlash anymore.

Probably not a bad idea. The documentation is available on this GitHub repository, and iXsystems entertains pull requests from all!

Actually AFAIK there's more members who use SSDs than DOMs, probably because a DOM is essentially a small and expensive SSD.

My to-do list includes rearranging that section. At the very least, the most commonly-used option should be mentioned first.

Yeah, I noticed the change yesterday.

For others reading the thread, the new recommended minimum size for the OS device is now 32GB (up from 16GB). The absolute minimum is still 8GB.
