Can one NAS mirror another in real time?

Is there any way with FreeNAS 8 (or any other freely available NAS OS, for that matter) to have two totally independent systems, lets call them a Primary and a Backup, where the Backup mirrors the Primary in real time? So if the Primary would go totally up in smoke (mobo, hard drives, etc.) I could switch the Backup to be the Primary and I'm good to go? (and then build another Backup)

I have a FreeNAS server running version 7 and I haven't had great results with Rsync.

You're looking for something like FreeBSD's HAST or Linux's DRBD, most likely. Both exist, but maybe not as part of a usable out-of-the-box free software NAS package just yet. Even in the pay-to-play NAS market, redundancy is a premium feature.

My guess is the FreeNAS guys would like to tackle this, but more fundamental problems are more pressing right now.
