Hello,

Sorry to start again a thread about this topic. I searched on the forum and there is quite a lot of information, but is a big mess.

Someones stating that this error could be repaired with dd, others claiming that can be sorted with SMART tests, others just say that disk must be RMAed.

I'm still a novice with FreeNAS, got it working 6 months ago and need to ask what to do next, because I'm not familiar with FreeNAS errors (obviously) nor any of its tools.

Right now I'm running a RAIDZ1 with 3 disks and FreeNAS version FreeNAS-9.10.2-U4 (27ae72978) if this helps.

What is the best step to take at this point?

EDIT:
Just to add some detail, the full error states:
Device: /dev/ada0, 1 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors

And in another email
Code:
(ada0:ahcich0:0:0:0): READ_FPDMA_QUEUED. ACB: 60 80 30 30 99 40 43 00 00 00 00 00
(ada0:ahcich0:0:0:0): CAM status: ATA Status Error
(ada0:ahcich0:0:0:0): ATA status: 41 (DRDY ERR), error: 40 (UNC )

Part of the reason for the "big mess" is that different people have different philosophies. I don't trust the idea that you can "fix" a failing sector using dd, badblocks, etc--if the sector's failing, it's failing. That's less a technical answer than a philosophical one. But to counter that, a handful (i.e., low single digits) of pending sectors doesn't worry me greatly if the number is staying steady.

Yeah, sure. I absolutely agree with you. I didn't mean it in a such a negative sense, people giving his opinion (or even stating as it was the absolute truth) is the charm of a forum. Reading those threads was quite productive.

I just meant that a someone with no experience with this software needs clearer guidance.

I understand, but the counter-issue is that there isn't universally-agreed "clearer guidance." Though I expect that the folks who wrote the guides on using dd or badblocks would probably agree that a n00b would be better off just replacing the disk, especially if it's under warranty.

Well I have got some experience with dd and quite a lot with linux. Still I never dug in this kind of things and don't want to run a kludge an risk my data somehow.

Finally checked that the disk was on warranty and asked for a RMA. Maybe once I'm more used to freenas I may try those recovery procedures.

Thanks all for your comments.
