Hi,

Trying to get freenas working on my system.
I am using an old HP Xw8200 Workstation with
Dual Xeon CPU
8gb ram
DeLock 89384 (it uses a ASM1061 chip) Sata Controller

And i am getting these error mesages in my logs :

an 10 05:26:20 freenas kernel: ahcich0: Timeout on slot 20 port 0
Jan 10 05:26:20 freenas kernel: ahcich0: is 00000000 cs 00000000 ss 00000000 rs 00100000 tfd 50 serr 00000000 cmd 0004df17

Jan 10 05:26:20 freenas kernel: (ada1:ahcich4:0:0:0): Retrying command

(i cannot even list the contents of my zfs volume, it just locks up)

After having searched for these error messages, i found that somebody created a patch for this problem with my sata controller for Freebsd ;

https://www.mail-archive.com/svn-src-all@freebsd.org/msg133878.html

Is there a possibility for me to add this patch to my freenas install?

If so, any kind soul out there that has some hints on how i go about applying the patch?

That someone is actually a FreeNAS developer

Please create a feature request at bugs.freenas.org asking that the patch be integrated and post the issue number here.

I'm still running FreeNAS-9.10.2-U6, and I'm looking at options for extra SATA ports. For this controller to work, I assume I would have to upgrade to FreeNAS 11?

And a related question, for additional reasons I'm also considering getting an ARC-1224-8i. This is to transfer data from arrays hooked up to an erratic 1220, but after that's done I can of course JBOD it. How is support for this card under either/both FreeNAS 9 and 11?

Based on the bug report it does look like you'll need FreeNAS 11, I can tell you as a previous 9 user, 11 was a surprisingly pretty seamless upgrade. The actual amount of stuff which was changed wasn't that intense. So go for 11.1 U5 for the time being.

I can't tell you much about that controller, sorry.

Thanks, I'll have a look at that upgrade then. On a side note, am I right in assuming that all the necessary information on the array is stored on it, i.e. that I could hook my six existing disks up to my backup FreeNAS 9 USB drive even after having run it under 11? I'll be making a new backup drive, this is just for my understanding of Raid Z characteristics.

after upgrading freenas will notify you to upgrade you pool. just don't do that, until you are sure you won't need to switch back to FN9.
google for feature flags if you want to know more. short: new versions of zfs have new features, if you use those, you can't import the pool with an older zfs version, if you don't use them importing is not a problem. all necessary information is stored on disk.

see erics guide on feature flags: https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?resources/zfs-feature-flags-in-freenas.95/

Update: so far so good. Just received the first bits of hardware and the controller (Delock 89384) boots up with a single 8TB drive (WD80EFAX) attached to it. FreeNAS-11.1-U5 picks both up immediately and the drive shows up in the disk overview. Syslog looks clean too (apart from the FreeNAS 11 / USB drive SMART warning thing, that is).

I'll have to get five more drives and do a full load test to see what kind of performance I can get from it (also if my PSU can handle twelve drives in practice), but at least there are no driver issues :)
