Hi,

I'm a Freenas n00b,

I installed FreeNAS-8.0.4-RELEASE-p2-x86 (11367) on to a 4gig USB drive.

I used the: FreeNAS-8.0.4-RELEASE-p2-x86.iso

Things start out ok and it works for a few minutes. Soon after, the web service fails. I can restart it, and it it work for awhile, then fails again. Periodically, the whole device fails. not sure what happens, but it's not reachable via IP and I have to restart it.

This is a fresh install, nothing configured. The ONLY thing I have done to it is change the IPv4 network setting, changed the admin password, and enabled ssh.

I have 4 gig of ram, but it only shows up as 3gig.

Processor is a: Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5200 @ 2.50GHz

Motherboard is: Biostar G41-M7

Raid contoller is a: Adaptec RAID 51245

I have not done anything with it as its competley not stable and I have no idea why. Once its stable, then I can start using it.

I installed the same iso on vmware workstation 8 and it works fine, so I'm suspecting I may have something physcial wrong.

Any idea where to begin troubleshooting?

For the webserver, the log shows:

A restart of the daemon works, but then the network "disappears". I'm trying to get a monitor and keyboard hooked up so I can see what happens when this occurs.

Very frustrating.

I've been working on this for weeks now. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

I've been tackling stuff like this with a new build i'm doing and it's frustrating, but stick with it. I'll leave the log files up to the experts hanging around here. I'm going to guess that the ram not showing up as 4gb has something to do with installing the 32 bit version of freenas and how much memory can be addressed. If it's working in a VM and not on the box then I'll guess it's not anything you're doing on the install. When i was having random issues, the first thing that was suggested to me on the forum was to test the memory and look for other hardware components that may be failing. I'm assuming that you're pretty sure the motherboard/cpu/memory were working well before this or are they all new?

Thanks.

Last thing onthe screen today was:

[root@freenas] ~# Write failed: Broken pipe

It's no longer reachable view it's IP. Going to have to put a monitor on it.

Yes, I'm using the 32bit version, so that could explain the 3gig of memory. I was trying to install the 64bit version, but ran into a bunch of USB issues with it, and gave up and went to the 32bit version beciuase I could get that to work on VMWare. Now that I have a working USB, I may try the 64bit version.

Ok, got a monitor on it. This is what was on the screen (besides the menu of course)

<snip>
panic: vm_fault: fault on nofault entry, addr: 84c4c00

cpuid = 0
uptime: 1h45m43s
</snip>

Oh, yes, its all new hardware. Everything is new but the adaptec controller.

Reboot caused a kernal panic. 2nd reload...comes up fine, httpd fails:
