How we’re delivering what our community has been asking for: Enterprise features on your own hardware.

For years, a clear request has echoed through TrueNAS community channels – maybe you’ve made it yourself: “Give us a way to access TrueNAS Enterprise features on our own hardware.

If you’ve been caught between a powerful storage platform with no license fees and a full Enterprise appliance you didn’t need, you know exactly what that gap felt like. This post explains how we’re closing it – and why.

TrueNAS Community Edition has always been powerful, reliable, and genuinely free. But certain advanced capabilities – proactive alerting, advanced management, defense-grade security, performance enhancements, third party software integrations, etc – have only been available only with TrueNAS Enterprise appliances. That wasn’t an accident or an oversight. Our Open-Core business model is how TrueNAS sustains itself as a company and how the development work for TrueNAS Community Edition is funded.

TrueNAS Community Edition and Enterprise versions were separate islands, without an easy upgrade path or way to provide access to advanced features. In order to connect the two, a bridge was needed. TrueNAS Connect was introduced in early 2026 as a monitoring and management solution, extending and enhancing your TrueNAS installation with additional web-driven features, while creating a simpler install process for new users. As we continue through 2026, TrueNAS Connect also becomes a bridge between our free Community Edition and our Enterprise Appliances.

Given the importance of transparency in our Open-Core business model, we want to be clear about three things:

  • TrueNAS Community Edition will always remain a storage solution with no license fees. No existing Community Edition features are being paywalled, and new features are coming just as they always have. TrueNAS Connect is completely optional – you can run your storage system however you’d like.
  • TrueNAS Enterprise has always had features that could only be accessed through commercial relationships. Enterprise customers have been paying for features and support that Community Edition users didn’t have access to for more than a decade now, but these were only available on TrueNAS Enterprise Appliances.
  • TrueNAS Connect builds the bridge. What is new is that there will now be a third option to access some of those enhanced features without buying a TrueNAS Enterprise appliance. TrueNAS Connect enables this.

TrueNAS Connect is a bridge, not a wall.

It’s a Connection between Community Edition and Enterprise.

How TrueNAS Got Here

TrueNAS has evolved through distinct phases, each driven by how the community and the market have grown around it.

2010–2018: One Stack, One Community

FreeNAS was a single software stack: free, powerful, and reliable with OpenZFS at its core. It was widely adopted by technical teams, home labs, and university environments. TrueNAS Enterprise appliances emerged from those beginnings and added high-availability with additional enterprise capabilities for organizations that needed them.

2019–2025: Two Paths, One Foundation

As adoption expanded, TrueNAS moved to an Open-Core model with two delivery paths built on the same software foundation:

  • Community Edition (CE) maintained its no-cost roots. We added better apps, containers, and VM support, keeping CE as the on-ramp for technical users and innovative organizations.
  • Enterprise Appliances served professional organizations and enterprise customers with HA, NVMe performance, defense-grade security, and Gartner-recognized support and service. All things required to protect business and mission-critical data.

This model worked well, but it left a gap. If you were a professional user, a small business, or someone managing multiple systems – and you wanted more than CE offered – your only option was to move to a full Enterprise appliance. There was no intermediate software-only step.

2026 and Beyond: Three Options, One TrueNAS Platform

In 2026, two things are changing at once: we’re introducing a third path that fills the gap between CE and Enterprise.

  • Community Edition is for hobbyists, homelabbers, students, and self-reliant technical teams who want a powerful storage platform with no license fees. It includes the full OpenZFS foundation with file, block, and object protocols, VMs, Docker, Apps, and more. It remains free – nothing is being removed, and new open-source features continue to be added.
  • TrueNAS Enterprise is for IT leaders and professional organizations that need turnkey HA appliances, defense-grade security, dedicated support, and deep integrations with platforms like VMware, Proxmox, and Veeam. TrueNAS Enterprise continues to improve and remains the right choice for mission-critical environments. From NBA on Prime to NIST and Vanderbilt University, thousands of companies around the world trust TrueNAS with their data – ranging from media and entertainment (Warner Brothers, Paramount, Marvel) to technology (Cisco, ActivisionBlizzard, Google) and federal institutions (NASA, FAA, Department of Energy) and throughout the Global 1000.
  • TrueNAS Connect enables a new option for power users: professionals, small businesses, and anyone managing important storage. It’s the bridge, delivering enterprise-class capabilities like advanced monitoring, websharing, proactive alerts, multi-system management, and ransomware protection to your own hardware. Over the coming years, we plan to offer more value-added features to power users.

Connect includes a free “Foundation” tier that covers basic functionality, with paid “Plus” and future “Business” tiers for teams that need more. It also greatly simplifies the installation of Community Edition onto bare metal. And, upgrading to Plus or Business tiers is also a simple way to give back to the project while receiving tangible value in return. However, no one is required to use TrueNAS Connect in order to use TrueNAS.

The Open-Core model isn’t changing. TrueNAS software remains the foundation across all three. Many new features will automatically be enabled in the free Community Edition. TrueNAS Connect manages the licensing and permissions that enables Enterprise capabilities beyond the free tier, and its free Foundation tier ensures that everyone who wants access to it, has it.

This is an answer to the request the community has been making for years.

TrueNAS 26 is a new chapter in TrueNAS development

TrueNAS 26 will be the first release with an annual cadence. This change is driven by a focus on quality that can benefit all users, enabled by longer development, testing, and release cycles.

The move to annual release cycles will reduce the frequency of software updates and enable Long-Term Support (LTS) features for Enterprises. TrueNAS 26 also includes the foundation for licensing of some Enterprise features like LTS via TrueNAS Connect. This will give power users many more options for using TrueNAS.

The BETA of TrueNAS 26 starts in April, and the Release is planned for Q3. While not all capabilities will be available immediately, we plan to make a progressive rollout.

What This Means for You

If you’re a Community Edition user

Nothing changes about what you have today. CE remains free, the source code remains open, and new features continue to be added. What does change is that you now have a bridge to enterprise-class capabilities on your own hardware – through TrueNAS Connect – if and when you want them. Start with the Foundation tier at no cost. And, upgrade to paid tiers only if you see the value or simply want to contribute to the TrueNAS project. If not, no worries — you can stay on the Foundation tier as long as you’d like. The choice is yours.

If you’re a Power user

You’ve had the fewest options in TrueNAS – until now. TrueNAS Connect is built for you: advanced monitoring, management across multiple systems, proactive alerts, and more – at a price point that reflects the scale of your environment, not the cost of a full Enterprise appliance. And as TrueNAS Connect grows, so does what’s available to you. You now have a path to the enterprise-class capabilities that were previously out of reach on your own hardware.

If you’re an Enterprise customer

Enterprise appliances and support continue to improve. TrueNAS Connect will add a management layer that makes your infrastructure easier to operate securely at scale. And the enterprise-led development model means that every feature is designed with your requirements in mind from the start, not retrofitted after the fact.

All TrueNAS 26 users should experience improved software quality with less frequent software updates.

TrueNAS Connect is a Bridge, Not a Wall

TrueNAS Connect is about expanding access. For the first time, enterprise capabilities that were previously available only through appliance purchases have a path to reach the broader community – with a free tier to start.

We know this is a shift. We believe it’s the right approach – both for the long-term health of TrueNAS as a community and a company, as well as for the quality, consistency, and options for what all users receive.

We also know that developing our software transparently invites scrutiny. We welcome it. The alternative is developing behind closed doors and keeping secrets. We’d rather earn that trust by showing the work and by being direct when we make hard decisions and explaining why.

TrueNAS Connect is the bridge that enables the third option that many in the community have asked for: software-defined storage with more enterprise capabilities – giving you more control, more options, and a path forward on your own hardware. We look forward to building it the same way we’ve built everything else: through the collaboration and feedback of our community.

TrueNAS Connect Plus is now available to all TrueNAS Community Edition users.

Over the past few months, many of you have started using TrueNAS Connect to simplify setup, access, and day-to-day visibility for your systems. As more users connected multiple systems, a clear pattern emerged. What began as a single deployment often grew into a small fleet. Home labs expanded. Secondary systems sprung up as replication targets. Teams added remote sites. Production workloads spread across locations.

In those conversations, one request came up consistently. You wanted an option between TrueNAS Community Edition and TrueNAS Enterprise. Something that delivers more centralized visibility and management, without requiring new hardware or a full Enterprise deployment.

TrueNAS Connect Plus is our response to that feedback.

A brief overview of TrueNAS Connect

TrueNAS Connect is a secure, browser-based management service that extends TrueNAS by providing centralized visibility and simplified management across one or more TrueNAS systems, without replacing the local TrueNAS interface.

The product has now exited beta and is available to all TrueNAS Community Edition users. TrueNAS Connect is offered in two tiers, Foundation and Plus, so you can choose the level of functionality that fits how you run TrueNAS today.

If you are new to Connect or want more detail on the architecture, security model, and core capabilities, see our original introduction.Introducing TrueNAS Connect. Streamlined Management for Your TrueNAS Systems

When the Plus tier makes sense

TrueNAS Connect Foundation remains the free starting point for Connect and is designed to make it easier to get set up, stay informed, and securely access a single TrueNAS system.

The Plus tier is intended for users who are managing multiple TrueNAS systems and want to reduce the friction that comes with switching between interfaces and tracking system health independently. It adds fleet-level visibility, historical reporting, and centralized management tools, while keeping control on your own hardware.

Connect Plus supports up to three TrueNAS systems, with a combined capacity of up to one petabyte.

Community-driven Pricing for Multi-System Setups

When we first introduced the Plus tier, pricing was based on a per-system model. Based on direct feedback from the community, we reworked that approach.

Today, TrueNAS Connect Plus covers up to three systems under a single subscription, at a cost of sixty dollars per year. That works out to as little as twenty dollars per system, providing a simpler and more predictable way to manage a small fleet.

This pricing reflects how many community members actually run TrueNAS, and lowers the barrier to evaluating centralized management across multiple systems.

Early Connectors Promotion

To thank early adopters and encourage continued feedback as TrueNAS Connect evolves, we are offering a limited-time Early Connectors promotion.

With this promotion, new Plus subscriptions are available at 50 percent off for the first year. This brings the annual cost to thirty dollars for up to three systems and is intended to make it easier to try the Plus tier while the platform continues to grow.

For more details and eligibility, check out our Early Connectors page. The promotional offer closes May 31st, 2026, so go ahead and test out TrueNAS Connect today.

What you can do with TrueNAS Connect Plus

TrueNAS Connect Plus includes additional capabilities designed to make multi-system environments easier to monitor and manage, including:

  • Single sign-on across systems using secure, browser-based keyring access
  • Custom enclosure views for visualizing drive locations and pool health
  • Historical stats and reports to identify trends over time
  • Advanced Notification Options
  • Centralized inventory reporting across systems
  • Application and virtual machine visibility and control
  • Replication management across systems, currently under active development

A feature comparison between the Foundation and Plus tiers is available on the TrueNAS Connect website.

Looking Ahead

TrueNAS Connect will continue to evolve as a platform.

In addition to a planned Business tier in 2026 for larger fleets and team-based access, we are actively working on new capabilities that will be added over time. These include ransomware protection features, browser-based file sharing, and additional management enhancements.

As with TrueNAS itself, development is guided by real-world usage and community feedback.

TrueNAS Connect
We’re introducing TrueNAS Connect, a secure, browser-based control panel that extends your existing TrueNAS experience. TrueNAS Connect centralizes system monitoring and management, making it easier to stay in control with predictable workflows and greater visibility across your storage platforms.

What is TrueNAS Connect?

TrueNAS Connect is a new web-based management service that extends and enhances the TrueNAS platform. There’s nothing extra to install – simply log in and gain streamlined workflows, at-a-glance visibility, and secure management of your storage environment.

Hosted by TrueNAS at our multiple datacenters for redundancy, TrueNAS Connect will be available for systems running TrueNAS 25.10, with a test rollout beginning in October 2025 alongside TrueNAS 25.10-RC1. TrueNAS Community Edition users will have free access to the pre-release version of TrueNAS Connect before its official release in December, with a staged rollout targeting TrueNAS Enterprise users by March 2026.

A New Way to Manage TrueNAS

TrueNAS Connect enhances, rather than replaces, the familiar TrueNAS interface. From the start, our engineering team focused on delivering simplicity, security, and long-term flexibility – ensuring that TrueNAS Connect adds meaningful value to your installation and operations workflow.

  • Simplicity First: TrueNAS Connect provides a straightforward way to handle regular tasks, offering at-a-glance information, easy report reviews, and simple checks—all from one convenient bookmark at https://connect.truenas.com.
  • Streamlined Workflows: Systems connected to TrueNAS Connect can easily set up alerts for system health, drive status, and updates. It also automates the SSL registration process for your system, ensuring confidential communications.
  • Always Evolving: Leveraging the extensible and powerful TrueNAS API, TrueNAS Connect will continue to add new features and functionality over time — even between TrueNAS software releases.
  • Optional by Choice: Prefer the classic TrueNAS web UI? It remains fully functional and fully accessible – TrueNAS Connect simply makes accessing it more convenient.

Secure by Design

We know that a key element of TrueNAS is the ability to exercise control over your own data. When we designed TrueNAS Connect as a hosted Software as a Service (SaaS) solution, we knew we had to prioritize the security of user data and user accounts.

TrueNAS control channels are limited to your private network over secure WebSockets. TrueNAS Connect provides a management framework and receives statistics only. If you have an existing personal or corporate VPN solution (such as WireGuard or TailScale) you can connect through this, and securely manage your TrueNAS systems without your data ever leaving your control.

For access to TrueNAS Connect itself, we’re leveraging multiple OAuth providers. Currently, access requires either Google or GitHub as an OAuth provider, but we’re working to add more in the future. Credentials are never stored on TrueNAS servers.

Once you’re logged in, you can optionally use the secure keyring in your own browser to store your local TrueNAS credentials – again, without them ever crossing a non-secure network. These credentials can be synced by any means supported by your own local browser or operating system (Google Password Manager, iCloud Keychain).

With TrueNAS Connect, both your data and your system remain under your control.

What Does TrueNAS Connect Offer?

TrueNAS Connect delivers these practical advantages for TrueNAS users:

Real-Time Health Monitoring

TrueNAS Connect delivers comprehensive health reporting capabilities that provide real-time visibility into system status, performance metrics, and critical events across your TrueNAS system(s). The integrated monitoring features track key metrics including CPU usage, temperature, disk I/O, memory utilization, and storage capacity while highlighting critical alerts and offline disk conditions. TrueNAS Connect can also alert you if your TrueNAS system is down or unresponsive, based on its last connection time.

Customizable Alert Delivery

The health reporting system enables infrastructure management through customizable notification tasks that can deliver alerts via email, SMS, Slack, or PagerDuty based on configurable thresholds and schedules. With extended data retention for TrueNAS Connect Plus and immediate alert visibility for all users, Connect ensures you stay informed about system health issues before they impact your operations, eliminating the need to manually check individual TrueNAS systems.

Customizable Alert Delivery
Configure custom notifications to receive alerts for any or all of your systems.

Inventory Management

TrueNAS Connect offers centralized monitoring and coordination of your TrueNAS system(s), including detailed hardware asset tracking, proactive health monitoring with customizable alerts, and flexible reporting capabilities for asset management and compliance. You can easily export the inventory of one or more systems in CSV or JSON format for parsing and integration with data analysis tools or programmatic processing.

Find drives across multiple pools or multiple systems using the Inventory view.

Web Installation

Included with TrueNAS Connect and designed to support TrueNAS 25.10 and beyond, web-driven installation eliminates the need for a traditional text-based console setup, and allows for easy deployment on “headless” system builds even without out-of-band management. Check out our previous blog Seamless Setup: Exploring TrueNAS Web-Driven Installation to learn more.

Get up and running, without a keyboard or monitor attached, using Web-Driven Installation.

Enclosure Mapping

To complement the detailed asset tracking, Enclosure Mapping is also available with TrueNAS Connect, providing an at-a-glance view of the physical layout of your TrueNAS hardware, including disk and pool health. Common enclosures are already defined in the software; but since we know that our Community has a wide variety of systems running TrueNAS, we’ve worked hard to let you design your own custom enclosure topologies.

TrueNAS Connect Plus offers Even More

TrueNAS Connect is available in two tiers:

Foundation (Included)

TrueNAS Connect Foundation

TrueNAS Connect Foundation is available to all TrueNAS users as a no-cost perpetual license, and supports the installation and management of a single system. It’s ideal for new TrueNAS users to get started.

Key features include:

  • Email alerting and reports
  • SSL certificate configuration
  • Web-driven installation for TrueNAS Community Edition
  • Secure Login via connect.truenas.com using Google or GitHub OAuth
  • Automated SSL/WebUI certificates for encrypted control paths

Like TrueNAS itself, the Foundation tier of TrueNAS Connect is a free, perpetual license – but for additional features or multi-system management, you may want to consider TrueNAS Connect Plus.

Plus (Subscription)

TrueNAS Connect Plus

Once you’ve outgrown the features of Foundation, the Plus tier adds fleet-wide features for growing teams and is priced at $50/NAS/year – building upon the Foundation tier’s features.

Designed for non-Enterprise users with up to four systems with a total capacity of 1 PB, TrueNAS Connect Plus will launch later in December 2025. Available via monthly or annual subscription, with beta access free through December 2025.

Some notable additions over the Foundation tier include:

  • Single Sign-On (KeyRing) for multiple TrueNAS systems
  • Custom Enclosure Management for visualizing drive locations and identifying failures
  • Historical stats and reports for up to 90 days, enabling performance and health monitoring
  • Additional alerting options including SMS text messages and PagerDuty
  • Inventory Management for comprehensive hardware reports
  • Replication Management for streamlined data protection across systems (under development – releasing soon)
  • App Management for controlling and monitoring applications across your fleet

An additional tier of service is planned for Enterprise/Business users in 2026.

What’s Happening to TrueCommand?

TrueCommand 3.2 will continue to support TrueNAS 25.10 “Goldeye” and beyond. It remains the best choice for air-gapped or on-premises deployments, and for managing older TrueNAS versions. TrueNAS Connect builds on TrueCommand with a hosted model that simplifies deployment and scaling. Future alignment of the two products will be guided by user feedback.
