[Home](https://www.truenas.com) › **TrueNAS vs HPE Alletra Storage**

A note for HPE Alletra customers

# HPE calls it one platform, BUT REALLY It's three products sharing a box.

HPE Alletra Storage MP is HPE's newest storage line — block, file, and object storage sold as separate software products that share the same hardware and a single cloud console on HPE GreenLake. Need all three? You're licensing, provisioning, and paying for three. TrueNAS Enterprise runs file, block, and object from one system, one license — priced once, not billed by how much you use it.

[See the Comparison](https://www.truenas.com/hpe-alletra-storage-alternative/#comparison)

The TL;DR

- **Alletra Storage MP is not one system for all three workloads.** Block, file, and object run as separate software environments that can't operate at the same time on the same node — they share hardware and HPE's Data Services Cloud Console, not a data plane.
- **Support isn't equal across tiers.** HPE's entry-level Foundation Care defaults to next-business-day response; 24/7 with a 4-hour onsite response is a paid step up. Every TrueNAS appliance includes a Bronze-or-higher support tier, so you can always open a ticket and reach a support engineer.
- **GreenLake bills you for usage. TrueNAS doesn't.** GreenLake is consumption-based — your bill moves with how much you store. TrueNAS Enterprise is one-time licensing with optional support: the same price whether you're using 10% of the array or 90%.
- **TrueNAS is the better option for teams that want file, block, and object on one system** without buying three products to get there — and you can test the full platform on [Community Edition](https://www.truenas.com/download/) before you spend anything.

Why teams switch

## Six reasons storage teams choose TrueNAS over HPE Alletra

Most conversations start the same way: a GreenLake renewal or a true-up bill lands, and someone finally reads the contract line by line.

1

### Did you get the right support?

With every TrueNAS appliance, a Bronze-or-higher support tier means you can always open a ticket and reach a support engineer — questions answered, problems solved. Period. HPE's Foundation Care — the plan most Alletra deployments ship with — defaults to next-business-day response instead; getting 24/7 coverage with a 4-hour onsite response means stepping up to a higher-cost tier.

Bronze-or-higher support on every appliance

2

### File, block, and object — actually one system.

TrueNAS Enterprise runs NFS, SMB, iSCSI, S3, and NVMe-oF from a single system and a single UI — no separate SKU per protocol. Alletra Storage MP can't say the same: it shares hardware and HPE's Data Services Cloud Console across block, file, and object, but each runs as its own software environment, licensed on its own, and none of them run together on the same node.

Native unified platform

3

### Who owns the software you're running?

HPE licenses its file storage for Alletra MP from VAST Data — it isn't even HPE's code. TrueNAS runs on OpenZFS: open-source, with a transparent versioning and release process, built and supported end to end by the same team. One codebase, one vendor accountable for all of it.

One vendor, one codebase, one accountable team

4

### Licensing you can plan a budget around.

TrueNAS Enterprise uses all-inclusive licensing: no per-TB traps, no capacity penalties, no feature upsells. You know the number before you sign, for the life of the deployment. GreenLake works differently — it bills on consumption, so your cost moves with usage, in a market where NAND prices have already surged 30–60%.

Predictable, all-inclusive licensing

5

### The industry's unrealistic compression and reduction ratios.

You've seen it in the ads: vendors quote a system at raw capacity, then assume a compression or dedupe ratio that may not hold for your data. HPE quotes the Alletra Storage MP B10000 at 5.9 PB "effective" capacity from 2.9 PB raw — built on an assumed reduction ratio. TrueNAS always gives you a fair shake: no invented ratios, just a real, honest capacity estimate.

Honest capacity, every time

6

### Tackling data corruption in real time.

TrueNAS runs on OpenZFS, which checksums every block on write and validates on every read — correcting silently, in real time. No other storage vendor today does real-time correction at the filesystem layer; it's typically a scheduled task, run after the fact, treated as an afterthought. Data integrity isn't an add-on with TrueNAS. It's the base layer.

Real-time correction, not a scheduled afterthought

The architecture, honestly

## One box. Three products. Sold separately.

HPE's pitch for Alletra Storage MP is "a single, unified architecture" for block, file, and object. What that means in practice: the same physical hardware can run one of three separate software environments — never more than one workload type per node, provisioned and licensed as its own product.

The thing that's actually unified is the control plane: Data Services Cloud Console, HPE's cloud-hosted management layer on GreenLake, sits over all three. It's a real convenience for monitoring — it doesn't make block, file, and object one platform underneath it, and it doesn't change that you're buying three licenses to cover three workloads.

TrueNAS Enterprise runs NFS, SMB, iSCSI, S3, and NVMe-oF from the same OpenZFS data plane, on the same system, under one license — without rebuilding, migrating, or renegotiating anything as you add protocols.

FAQ

## Common questions

### Is HPE Alletra Storage MP really one unified storage platform?

+

Not in the way most buyers assume. Alletra Storage MP shares hardware and a single cloud console (Data Services Cloud Console on HPE GreenLake) across block, file, and object. But block, file, and object each run as separate software environments, licensed separately, and cannot run at the same time on the same node. If you need all three, you're provisioning and paying for three products.

### What's the best alternative to HPE Alletra Storage MP?

+

TrueNAS Enterprise is the better option for organizations that want file, block, and object running from one system and one license, without usage-based billing. It's a genuine fit for teams under roughly 30 PB per system who want OpenZFS data integrity, published pricing, and a no-cost Community Edition to test before buying — and less of a fit for shops already standardized on HPE's compute and GreenLake billing across the full data center.

### Does HPE Alletra Storage MP use HPE's own file storage software?

+

Partly. HPE's file storage for Alletra MP has run on software OEM'd from VAST Data since the platform launched in 2023. HPE introduced its own native filesystem as an alternative option in May 2026, but the VAST-based path remains available and widely deployed. Either way, file runs as a separate software stack from the block layer.

### What support response time does HPE Alletra Storage MP include?

+

It depends on what you buy. HPE's entry-level Foundation Care defaults to next-business-day response. Getting 24/7 support with a 4-hour onsite response requires stepping up to a higher support tier. Every TrueNAS appliance ships with a Bronze-or-higher support tier, so a support engineer is reachable by default — not as a paid upgrade.
