Using SCALE Catalogs

TrueNAS SCALE comes with a pre-built official catalog of over 50 available iXsystems-approved applications. Users can configure custom apps catalogs if they choose, but iXsystems does not directly support non-official apps in a custom catalog. TrueNAS uses outbound ports 80/443 to retrieve the TRUENAS catalog. Managing Catalogs Users can manage the catalog from the Catalogs screen. Click Manage Catalogs at the top right side of the Discover screen to open the Catalogs screen.

Using Install Custom App

SCALE includes the ability to run third-party apps in containers (pods) using Kubernetes settings. What is Kubernetes? Kubernetes (K8s) is an open-source system for automating deployment, scaling, and managing containerized applications. Generally, any container that follows the Open Container Initiative specifications can be deployed. Always read through the documentation page for the application container you are considering installing so that you know all of the settings that you need to configure.

Install Custom App Screen The Install Custom App screen allows you to configure third-party applications using settings based on Kubernetes. Use the wizard to configure applications not included in the TRUENAS catalog. The Install Custom button on the Discover application screen opens the Install Custom App configuration wizard. Figure 1: Install Custom Application Screen The breadcrumbs in the top header link to other screens. Discover closes the Install Custom App screen and opens the Discover screen.

Sandboxes (Jail-like Containers)

TrueNAS Sandboxes and Jailmaker are not supported by iXsystems. This is provided solely for users with advanced command-line, containerization, and networking experience. There is significant risk that using Jailmaker causes conflicts with the built-in Apps framework within SCALE. Do not mix the two features unless you are capable of self-supporting and resolving any issues caused by using this solution. Beginning with 24.04 (Dragonfish), TrueNAS SCALE includes the systemd-nspawn containerization program in the base system.
