Groups

The Groups screen lets you create and manage UNIX-style groups. Groups List Name Description Filter Groups Filters groups by keyword. COLUMNS Lets users display/hide list columns. ADD Opens the Group Configuration form Displays/hides built-in groups Group Group name. GID Group ID number. Builtin Whether or not the group is built-in. Permit Sudo Whether or not the group has Permit Sudo enabled. Samba Authentication Whether or not the group has Samba Authentication enabled.

Local Users Screens

The Credentials > Users screen displays a list of user accounts added to the system. By default built-in users except for root are hidden until you make them visible. Figure 1: Local User non-Built-in Accounts Toggle Build-In Users displays either the Show Built-In Users or Hide Built-in Users dialogs based on the current Users list view. If hidden, the Show Built-in Users dialog opens. Click Show to display the list of users.

Managing Users

In TrueNAS, user accounts allow flexibility for accessing shared data. Typically, administrators create users and assign them to groups. Doing so makes tuning permissions for large numbers of users more efficient. Root is the default system administration account for CORE, SCALE Angelfish, and early Bluefin releases. Users migrating from CORE to SCALE or from pre 22.12.3 releases must manually create an admin user account. Only fresh installations using an iso file provide the option to create the admin user during the installation process.

User Namespace The user namespace has 14 commands and is based on Users functions found in the SCALE API and web UI. It provides access to user account creation, configuration, and attribute management. You can also set up a local administrator account using this namespace.

User and Group Quota Screens

TrueNAS allows setting data or object quotas for user accounts and groups cached on or connected to the system. Go to Storage > Pools, find the desired dataset, and click to open the Dataset Actions menu and see the User Quota and Group Quota options. User Quotas Screen Clicking User Quotas from the Dataset Actions menu shows the User Quotas screen. Setting Description Filter User Quotas Enter a string to show saved quotas that match the string.

Setting Up Users and Groups

Creating users and assigning them to groups allows you to efficiently tune permissions and share data for large numbers of users. Only the root user account can log in to the TrueNAS web interface. When the network uses a directory service, import the existing account information using the instructions in Directory Services. Using Active Directory requires setting Windows user passwords inside Windows. To see user accounts, go to Accounts > Users.

Users and Teams

TrueCommand has a robust user management system that lets administrators personalize the experience for each user account. You can create user accounts in the TrueCommand interface. Alternately, LDAP can automatically create new user accounts when someone logs into TrueCommand with their LDAP credentials. You can also manage many user accounts simultaneously by organizing them into Teams. Adding Local User Accounts To create a new user account, open the Configure settings menu and click Users > + NEW USER.
