- SCALE is developed as an appliance that uses specific Linux packages with each release. Attempting to update SCALE with
aptor methods other than the SCALE web interface can result in a nonfunctional system.- TrueNAS SCALE has only been validated with systems up to 250 Drives. We currently recommend that users with higher drive counts run TrueNAS Enterprise.
- HA migration in Bluefin 22.12.0 is not recommended for critical-use Enterprise HA systems yet. Enterprise General Availability (GA) is planned for the 22.12.2 release but HA migrations from CORE are not recommended without consulting with iXsystems Support first.
- All auxiliary parameters are subject to change between major versions of TrueNAS due to security and development issues. We recommend removing all auxiliary parameters from TrueNAS configurations before upgrading.
- New security checks are present for host paths in use by various system services. If you have host paths that are shared by multiple system services (e.g. Apps and SMB), please read the 22.12 Known Issues and take steps to create unique host paths for each in-use system service.
- As part of security hardening, users upgrading to 22.12 Bluefin are prompted to create a separate administrative user for UI logins. TrueNAS shows an informational alert when only the root account is present and reminds to create the administrative user for logins. Future security updates to TrueNAS SCALE could disable the root account. Please create an administrative user as soon as possible after upgrading. See the Managing Users Tutorial for more details.

To upgrade an existing SCALE install, log in to your SCALE web interface and go to System Settings > Update.
See the TrueNAS Software Status page for recommendations about which software version to use based on your user type.
Update the system to the latest maintenance release of the installed major version before attempting to upgrade to a new TrueNAS SCALE major version.
When attempting to migrate from TrueNAS CORE, see the Migration section for cautions and notes about differences between each software and the CORE to SCALE migration process.
Systems with physical NICs migrating from TrueNAS CORE to TrueNAS SCALE 22.12 might encounter an issue relating to NIC names being updated and written to the database. Non-physical network interfaces (link aggregation, VLAN, bridge) might also experience disruptions due to name convention differences (see Component Naming for more information). If you experience network disruption after migrating from TrueNAS CORE to TrueNAS SCALE 22.12, go to Network and reapply the interface settings to the named physical interfaces. Then remove any saved bond, br, or vlan interface configurations, and recreate them.
When upgrading from TrueNAS SCALE 22.12 (Bluefin) to 23.10 (Cobia) as part of an upgrade path, reapply network configuration in 22.12 and again after updating to 23.10.
TrueNAS Enterprise
Migrations from TrueNAS CORE for Enterprise High Availability (HA) systems are not recommended at this time.

October 12, 2023 iXsystems is pleased to release TrueNAS SCALE 22.12.4.1! This is a small hotpatch designed to address a reported bug from the 22.12.4 release and updates Samba to the v4.17.12 security update:
- Fix for HDD temperature reporting (NAS-124452)

Known Issue:
An issue was found after 22.12.4.1 was released that disrupts migrations from CORE to SCALE 22.12.4.1 due to how the /home directory is handled during the update process (NAS-124623).
If you encountered this issue when attempting to migrate from TrueNAS CORE to SCALE 22.12.4.1, run the command mkdir /home in the TrueNAS CORE web interface shell and re-apply the upgrade.
Otherwise, users that intend to migrate from TrueNAS CORE to SCALE 22.12 (Bluefin) can directly migrate to the 22.12.4.2 hotfix release to avoid this issue.

iXsystems is pleased to release TrueNAS SCALE 22.12.3.3!
This is a small hotpatch to address a ZFS issue that appears in specific circumstances with encrypted ZFS replication tasks. When the replication source system is updated to SCALE 22.12.3, a mismatch in indirect block size (IBS) values can cause kernel panics when an encrypted replication task attempts to receive ZFS snapshots to the destination system. See OpenZFS 2.1 Pull Request #15073 for more details.
Users are encouraged to update any TrueNAS SCALE system used as a replication source or destination to 22.12.3.3 to avoid this issue. It is also recommended to update any ZFS-based systems currently used as a replication destination.

22.12.3 includes many new features and improved functionality that span new applications for deprecated services, change to SMB service, additional tools for troubleshooting, and web UI improvements. Changes include:
- New applications for deprecated SCALE services Dynamic DNS, TFTP, OpenVPN, WebDAV, rsync daemon, and S3 MinIO.
- Multichannel capabilities added to the SMB configuration form
- Updates to the Dashboard R50 image
- Updates to the latest Linux v5.15 kernel branch
- Update Samba to 4.17.8
This release fixes a bug with dataset encryption where it was possible to create an encrypted storage pool or dataset and unencrypted datasets within that pool or dataset. Beginning with 22.12.3, it is no longer possible to create an unencrypted dataset when the storage pool or dataset is created with encryption active. Datasets created in this manner are not affected by this fix. If the original intention was for the dataset to be encrypted, please migrate any data from the unencrypted dataset to a new encrypted dataset.
An issue was discovered with virtualization post-release. When virtual machines with PCI passthrough are deployed, delay upgrading to 22.12.3. For details and resolution notes, see NAS-122456.

As part of security hardening and improving feature maintainability, SCALE Bluefin 22.12.3 deprecated several TrueNAS systems services in preparation for full removal in SCALE 23.10 Cobia. Users with TrueNAS SCALE Bluefin installed should review the deprecated features table and migrate any currently used services before upgrading to TrueNAS SCALE Cobia 23.10. Beginning in SCALE Bluefin 22.12.3, the SCALE web interface generates an alert when a deprecated service is in use.
To avoid any possible service interruptions, customers with a TrueNAS Enterprise licensed system and Silver or Gold -tier support are prevented from upgrading to TrueNAS SCALE Cobia 23.10 until a guided upgrade with iXsystems Support is scheduled.

Nightly builds are considered experimental and highly unstable. Do not use a nightly build for anything other than testing and development.
Nightly images for TrueNAS SCALE are built every 24 hours, at around 2AM Eastern (EDT/EST) time. These images are made publicly available when they pass automated basic usability testing. This means that during times of heavy development, nightly images might be less frequently available. Online updates are created every 2 hours and are available in the SCALE UI online updating page.
