April 14, 2022

iXsystems is pleased to announce the general availability of TrueNAS 12.0-U8.1!

For those with FreeNAS installed on your system, we recommend updating or upgrading to FreeNAS 11.3-U5 first and then upgrading to TrueNAS 12.0-U8 with a single click to retain roll-back options. While it is an easy web update, we do recommend waiting to update your system’s zpool feature flags until you are finished validating your performance and functionality.

For those with TrueNAS HA systems and support contracts, we recommend contacting iXsystems Support to schedule an upgrade. We will verify your system health, configuration, and support the upgrade process as part of the “white glove” service that comes with any support contract.

NAS-113284

Samba CVE-2021-20316: Symlink race error can allow metadata read and modify outside of the exported share.

Do not enable SMB1 (this is disabled by default in TrueNAS 11.2 and later). If SMB1 must be enabled for backwards compatibility then add the auxiliary parameter:
unix extensions = no
to the Services > SMB configuration form and restart the service.
For versions prior to TrueNAS 13.0, we recommend only exporting areas of the file system by either SMB2 or NFS, not both.

Minio Project: Certificate errors in distributed mode with docker compose

Wild card certificates do not work with Minio

Reset the Minio domain configuration to localhost when the Minio SAN/CN configuration is empty except for a wildcard domain.

Asigra Plugin Upgrades

Asigra users running version 14.2.0.2 or earlier requires a TrueNAS CLI upgrade procedure to update to a new plugin version. In the TrueNAS web interface, open the **Shell** and enter
iocage upgrade asigra-plugin-name
, replacing
asigra-plugin-name
with whatever unique name was created for the plugin.

NAS-106992

Persistent L2ARC is disabled by default.

While the underlying issues have been fixed, this setting continues to be disabled by default for additional performance investigation. To manually reactivate persistent L2ARC, log in to the TrueNAS Web Interface, go to System > Tunables, and add a new tunable with these values:

Type =
sysctl

Variable =
vfs.zfs.l2arc.rebuild_enabled

Value =
1

TrueNAS "root" user account cannot be an SMB user.

This is an intentional change to improve software security and suitability for deployment in a variety of environments. Update the SMB configuration to use a different user account.

“All versions of Samba prior to 4.13.17 are vulnerable to an
out-of-bounds heap read write vulnerability that allows remote
attackers to execute arbitrary code as root on affected Samba
installations that use the VFS module vfs_fruit.

The specific flaw exists within the parsing of EA metadata when
opening files in smbd. Access as a user that has write access to a
file’s extended attributes is required to exploit this
vulnerability. Note that this could be a guest or unauthenticated user
if such users are allowed write access to file extended attributes.

The problem in vfs_fruit exists in the default configuration of the
fruit VFS module using fruit:metadata=netatalk or fruit:resource=file.
If both options are set to different settings than the default values,
the system is not affected by the security issue.”

>CVE-2022-44142

The CVE does not affect TrueNAS in its default configuration. However, it does impact configurations where users have opted to share same paths via AFP and SMB simultaneously. We recommend users upgrade to 12.0-U8 as soon as possible to eliminate this security risk.

While the underlying issues have been fixed, this setting continues to be disabled by default for additional performance investigation. To manually reactivate persistent L2ARC, log in to the TrueNAS Web Interface, go to System > Tunables, and add a new tunable with these values:

December 8, 2021

TrueNAS 12.0-U7 has been released, and includes a number of fixes, nearly a dozen more improvements, and a few platform enhancements. These include:

OpenZFS 2.0.6

Fixed edge-case smbd crash during server-side-copy. Fixed crashes related to unsupported auxiliary parameters.

Ongoing improvements to UI & middleware performance for large drive counts

Dashboard fixes for CPU temp reporting

Various M-Series and R-Series webUI improvements

Customers who purchase TrueNAS hardware or that want additional support must have a support contract to use TrueNAS Support Services.
The TrueNAS Community forums provides free support for users without a TrueNAS Support contract.

ESXi version 8 is shown in this article.

Before You Begin

<use xlink:href="#gdoc_link"></use>

Before starting configuration work in VMWare:

Allocate a drive or a few drives in your server cluster for the TrueNAS virtual machine.
The anticipated storage needs for your deployment determines the size and number of drives you need.

Download the <file>.iso</file> file from the TrueNAS.com downloads page.

Visit the TrueNAS hardware guide and take note of the minimum system requirements.
Note the information in the Memory and Storage Device Sizing sections.

The hardware guide provides guidance on how much memory, the number of CPUs, and drive size you need to configure.

Determine your data storage requirements. Consider the number of storage pools and the type of storage you need for your deployment or how you plan to use the TrueNAS.
See Setting Up Storage for information on pool layouts.

Determine the number of virtual hard drives (vmdks) you want to create when setting up your virtual machine.
For example, if you want a mirror layout you need to add a minimum of three drives, one for the boot drive and two for the mirrored storage.
If you want a mirror with a hot spare, you need to add a minimum of four drives, one for the boot drive, two for the mirrored storage and one for the hot spare.

Configure your network per your system requirements. Have the information ready when you configure your TrueNAS global network settings in the web interface.

You can add more hard drive now or use the Edit option to add drives later after saving the new virtual machine.
To create a mirror layout you need at least three hard drives, one for boot and two to create the mirrored storage.
Add as many hard drives as you need to create your desired storage layout. You can add more drives later after you install TrueNAS.

Click on the VM Options tab, and then click on Advanced to expand this section.
Next to the Configuration Parameters section, click on Edit Configuration.

TrueNAS 11.2-U8.1 is a hotpatch release that fixes issues with the error reporting system and ALUA port detection. TrueNAS 11.2-U8 documentation continues to apply to TrueNAS 11.2-U8.1.

iXsystems is pleased to announce the availability of TrueNAS 11.2-U8! This is primarily a bug fix release to address some remaining issues in the 11.2-STABLE train and prepare TrueNAS users for an important incoming change to AD/LDAP connectivity when using Microsoft Windows.

Before updating, contact iXsystems Technical Support for a pre-update health check and to answer any technical questions regarding this update. You can contact Support by calling 1-855-GREP-4-iX or emailing <a

});

The default ACL on new Windows datasets was changed from:

owner@:rwxpDdaARWcCos:fd:allow

group@:rwxpDdaARWcCos:fd:allow

everyone@::fd:allow

This means that world is no longer being granted read privileges by default on newly created SMB shares. If you need to add “read” to “world” on a newly-created dataset, run the command:

setfacl -m everyone@:rxaRc:fd:allow /mnt/path/to/dataset

});

TrueNAS NFSv4 exports do not work in a VMWare cluster at this time. NFSv3 will need to be used as a work-around.

The hubiC cloud service has suspended creation of new accounts.

The Mega cloud service is currently broken. The new version of rclone which fixes this will be available in 11.3.

When performing an update on HA systems, the “Apply Pending Updates” button does not apply the update. Instead, select the “Check Now” option.

If the email address configured in Services > S.M.A.R.T. > Email differs from the root user email address configured in Account > Users, only the root user email address will receive an email alert when there is a S.M.A.R.T. failure. If these email addresses need to differ, the workaround is to configure System > Alert Services.
