excellent idea, mem test is running so im leaving for today when i get back ill report the results and try the minus one drive tactic

i pulled one drive and booted, moved to the next drive pulled and booted, and on and on... unfortunately no dice

it just refuses to finish the tank import...

is there a key stroke to force it to continue? its not locked up or hung but more like just stops with the curser blinking

booting with 3 drives or less will complete boot and start freenas, with 4 or more drives during boot it attempts to import tank and stops before it can finish

when you say it boots with 3 drives but not 4 are these the same 3 drives or does any combination of 4 drives fail to boot.

i think freenas expects to see atleast four dirves to import my zpool on boot up, if it doesnt see four drives it doesnt attempt to import

what do you mean buy "pass"?

you cannot boot with all 6 drives attached - you can with none.
i wanted you to boot with just one drive attached at a time. if you can boot with the drive then it is probably okay.
write down the serial numbers of the drives then boot with only one of them attached and write down the outcome (wether the drive boots or not)
when you have booted 6 times you will know a little bit more.

i booted with one drive attached at a time, each time during boot when it got to importing tank it said "no such pool or data set" then it continues to boot and freenas starts, the gui shows tank status as unknown

I don't think you understand that the problem is importing the pool not booting with drives attached. With less than 4 drives there is no pool so it will boot just fine.

How long have you waited for it to import? Try waiting for hours.

i dont mind waiting, im thrilled to still have a shot at recovering my data, just wish there was some kind of working indication so you know there's something happening..

i did do a search for what happens during boot with multiple drives missing but i couldn't find anything relevant.
and i don't remember reading this in the manual.
i was hoping that one of your drives would fail to boot and he would be the problem - sorry for wasting your time.

I can't wait to get home to see if my freenas box imported tank and continued the boot process.. by the time I get home it will be about 20 hours from when I started the machine...
