All,

Last night I received and error saying that my zpool was degraded and that one of the drives was removed by an administrator. As a result I ran zpool clean NAS which cleared out the error. I then scrubbed the pool but I am now receiving the below error message. Do you think the drive that was originally removed from the pool is still causing problems and should be replaced?

Code:
[root@freenas ~]# zpool status -v|less

Clearing the error and running a scrub doesn't do anything to fix the problem.

What is your hardware and freenas version. Include your HDD controller and firmware version if using an expansion card. Also what are the smart values for that drive? Your probably have a bad controller or failing HDD.

Step 1. Start running automated smart tests on all your drives.

Step 2. Your motherboard has poorly supported marvel sata controllers. One is ok to use but the other is not. Make sure your drives are not plugged into any marvel controllers or at least using the one that works.

I setup automated smart testing on all of my drives. Do I need to wait to see if I receive errors from those tests in order to determine if one of my drives is bad? Is there a way to kick off one of these tests other than scheduling it through the web GUI?

So I should make sure that all of my drives are plugged into the intel sata controller if they aren't already. Does this problem occur randomly with the controllers because the system has been up and running for a few months now without any errors.

Thanks for all the help.

The marvel controllers experience timeout issues during heavy load and randomly. You might also just now be noticing a problem.

Double check what sata ports you are using and that your sata cables are connected correctly.

You can run manual smart tests with smartctl -t short /dev/adaX where -t can be short or long and adaX references your drive id.
