I am getting the below alert

CRITICAL: The volume vol1 (ZFS) state is DEGRADED: One or more devices has experienced an error resulting in data corruption. Applications may be affected.
I am running a freenas version FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201506162331. I know I am a few versions behind. I had to try different backups to get the server to boot up completely.

I am running a Custom Lenovo ThinkServer TS140 70A4000HUX i3-4130 16GB RAM No HDD Tower Desktop Server. The server has been running since early January 2015.

I have ran scrubs on the Zpool a couple of times and it comes back with the following information.

[root@freenas ~]# zpool status -v
pool: freenas-boot
state: ONLINE
scan: scrub repaired 0 in 11h51m with 0 errors on Thu Jul 23 19:34:13 2015
config:

NAME STATE READ WRITE CKSUM
freenas-boot ONLINE 0 0 0
gptid/7efa0eff-a0fa-11e4-8c45-6c0b84042e8c ONLINE 0 0 0

errors: No known data errors

pool: vol1
state: DEGRADED
status: One or more devices has experienced an error resulting in data
corruption. Applications may be affected.
action: Restore the file in question if possible. Otherwise restore the
entire pool from backup.

config:

errors: Permanent errors have been detected in the following files:

vol1/media:<0x4178>
[root@freenas ~]#

I am currently backing up most of the data on the Zpool to an external USB drive.

Is there anything I can do to repair the install or would it be best to do a complete reinstall of freenas?

If I have to reinstall, how can I copy my setup backup to the new install if needed.

What does the smart data say for your drives? Looks like you might have multiple drives failing and some data got damaged and couldn't be rebuilt. post smartctl -a /dev/ada[0,1,2] in [c0de] [/c0de] tags please.

Hmmm might be a bad sata cable on ada0. Check it's connection and maybe replace.

So he's got checksumming errors, and at a quick glance, everything but the first drive looks ok.

Not sure I like the mixed drive models in the same vdev...but be that as it may:

The first drive (which has 4.5 years of service) is a Western Digital Caviar green that has had most/all of its life running without the wdidle3 adjustment for external enclosures and NASses (apparently you didn't read the lengthy discussions in the forum about this?), and has thus racked up 600000+ load cycles (correct number should be <1000 for this age), well above the design tolerance, and is likely to be a dead man walking, and/or failing now. You probably should consider the first drive to be toast.

What I would do:

* Open the case
* Remove drive 0
* Smash it
* Buy another wd *blue* like the other drives
* Resilver

:)

Is the memory ECC? I would run a memtest either way after the backup is done.

It looks like ada1 is in the same boat. Only a year in service and already 200,000+ load cycles. Only ada2 is acting normally.

I just started reading the threads about wdidle3. I had never heard of it before. I will make those changes in the future on all new drives I purchase.

But now what is the best way to recover from this error? Do I back up the critical data from the Zpool and wipe everything and reinstall freenas? Do I backup the date from the zpool reformat all the drives but keep the existing freenas installation?

You buy new driver and replace the bad ones.

Yeah, I happen to agree. These drives have been used like a whipping post. You salvage what you can/want, throw these out, and you start with proper NAS drives, that you properly maintain.

I am looking for new drives now, but would like to delete the corrupted files.

Code:
errors: Permanent errors have been detected in the following files:

vol1/media:<0x4178>

Is there a way to tell which files have errors?

I believe (?) I'm not the expert---but I believe that this means that a file, itself, was not damaged, but rather the "metadata" regarding the record.

Your drives are fine. Yes the load cycle count on two of the drives is high but the drives are still healthy otherwise. It is not too late to use wdidle3 tool.

Checksum errors on all the drives indicates a possible problem with the sata controller, motherboard, or ram. Try swapping these components out and running a scrub.
