Hey, I'm new to the whole NAS concept, I've built a NAS system out of some semi-old hardware, drives are new, the motherboard isn't that old, everything else is pretty old, running on Pentium 4 1.6 Ghz and 1 Gig of DDR1 RAM on 400 MHz.

The system is running on two 500GB raid ready hard drives from WD.

Anyway the motherboard supports RAID 1 which is my goal here but freeNAS doesn't seem to be supporting the controller installed on the mobo, I've checked the hardware documentation for freeNAS couldn't find it anywhere and besides considering the age of the hardware I'm not comfortable relaying on hardware RAID atm so my only other choice is software raid so the question is, should I go for UFS or ZFS file system?

I've checked the ZFS docs, minimum required RAM size is 1GB but considering that we're talking about DDR1 I can only wonder how decent is this actually going to run.

If anyone with experience could shed some light on this, I would appreciate it.

Please take note that this NAS system won't be under any hard load, I need it for occasional storage and at best there might only be two users accessing the system.
