I have 3x hd 2TB, setup in a raid-z1 called /mnt/data. I have three separate setups i need. /backups (rsync all my comps), /docs (my personal files), /media (videos, ebooks, music, pictures.)

How should i set this up? should i make datasets for each one, or should i create volumes for each one under /mnt/data?

in the future iam going to be setting up a second freenas off site to mirror this freenas setup.

A FreeNAS ZFS "volume" is a ZFS zvol; a block device. You won't find that useful. You probably want three datasets. Great, flexible way to go.

What is best practices for the following....... in my backup data set, i have a few folders. Comp1, Comp2, Comp3? should i make these nested Datasets. or just keep them as folders.

Same thing for another Dataset called Storage. i have folders in there (Apps, Video, Audio, eBooks), should i make a dataset for each of those folders since they are its on category, or should i just keep them as folders?

What did you end up doing? Are you happy with the datasets vs. zvol?

i just made them into datasets. yes very ahppy, but one issue. i cant figure out how to do. I wanna see how much usable space i have total.

when i click on storage i see the following:
VolumePathUsedAvailableSizeStatus
Data /mnt/Data267.0 KiB (0%)1.2 TiB1.2 TiBHEALTHY
Data/Backup/mnt/Data/Backup17.2 GiB (1%)1.2 TiB1.3 TiBHEALTHY
Data/Storage/mnt/Data/Storage575.5 KiB (0%)1.2 TiB1.2 TiBHEALTHY
Data/Storage/Apps/mnt/Data/Storage/Apps118.5 GiB (8%)1.2 TiB1.4 TiBHEALTHY
Data/Storage/Graphics/mnt/Data/Storage/Graphics73.9 GiB (5%)1.2 TiB1.3 TiBHEALTHY
Data/Storage/Media/mnt/Data/Storage/Media244.0 KiB (0%)1.2 TiB1.2 TiBHEALTHY
Data/Storage/Media/Audio/mnt/Data/Storage/Media/Audio214.4 GiB (14%)1.2 TiB1.5 TiBHEALTHY
Data/Storage/Media/Video/mnt/Data/Storage/Media/Video1.5 TiB (54%)1.2 TiB2.7 TiBHEALTHY
Data/Storage/Media/eBooks/mnt/Data/Storage/Media/eBooks148.1 GiB (10%)1.2 TiB1.4 TiBHEALTHY

Now i add everything in the used coloumn i can see how much i have used up across all my drives but isnt there another way to see how much total usable space there is on all my drives in the zpool?

i do remember an option stick, let's say:

1. they gonna use all available space left in your whole set (4TB in total)
2. Fixed space, means you can limit the total amount of dat DATASET (or Folder), like limit it uptu 8gb or something.
