Not sure what guide you were using but the Digital Ocean guides for FreeBSD 10 work fantastic.
First create your jail and install a FEMP stack or a FAMP stack. Next install Wordpress with NGINX or Apache depending on what server stack you installed. It's that easy.
If you want to just play around and see if you can get something on line then you can set up your connection with freedns and play around. The good thing with this approach is your site will not get indexed by the search engine bots so you won't have to worry about excess traffic coming in. You will still have to do some research on hardening your server against known vulnerabilities and best practices for security and performance. A good start is a guide I found when doing the research myself. It's based on Apache and it's not an end all be all but it's a good starting point. But as others have stated your site will be crawled by every unscrupulous bot out there looking for a way in. Your best off thwarting this by implementing some sort of edge protection device to stop the traffic before it has a chance to enter your network.
