What kind of read/write performance should I be getting?

1. Grab another 8GB of memory
2. Grab a $30 intel network card
3. to test write speed run this on a dataset that has compression disabled.

4. to test read speed run this on a dataset that has compression disabled and also has the 21GB file created in the previous test.

Don't expect anything magical since your hardware is very 'iffy' and not recommended for freenas. For best results stick to recommended server hardware.
I don't believe your mobo is ECC compatible.

That's why I suggested you look at our recommendations.

Also, any idea why I always get this strange drive usage -- it only happens to this one drive:

Which drive is this? The Green, Barracuda, or one of the 4TB Reds? Did you run wdidle on your WD Green? If not, please do so.

That's one of the 4tb drives and the system dataset is on one of the 4tb drives -- I'm not sure if it's the same one, but that would make sense if it is.

How do I run wdidle (can/should I also run that on the Seagate drive -- I think it's a barracuda, but it may not be as it's a really old drive)

wdidle is a Western Digital utility, you don't run it on the Seagate.

You might want to post the results of your smart test on the WD Green, to look at the stats. Go to the shell and type: smartctl -a /dev/adaX (or possibly /daX), where X is a number. It looks like your device names start with ada. If you do post the information, either use code tags or upload a picture. Formatting is important for readability.

I think it's too late to bother with wdidle at this point. 1.2 million parks over the last 3.7 years.

I did notice two of (the first and third) my 4tb Reds have quite a few parks compared to the other one (4000~ vs. 200~).

Yeah, given that it's rated for ~300,000 ... I'd be careful what I put on the mirror.

I don't why there's a difference on your 4TB drives. I did compare the firmware, all three are the same. In any event, I wouldn't worry about it.

I think it's too late to bother with wdidle at this point. 1.2 million parks over the last 3.7 years.

Actually, I think I know why the second drive has a low number of park cycles....that drive was sitting idle in my server for a while as I didn't yet have any data to throw on it.

Everything that's on my raid1 array is backed up on at least one other drive (off the server). But that's also partially why I put the drives in Raid 1 because both were pulled out of external drives I've bought/been given over the years (I mean, that barracuda is from 2009).

And alright.

Ummm, another random question -- what would you guess is the likelihood of there being a serious error caused by not having ECC memory (since most of the content on the server is movies, bitrot isn't really a concern)?

P.p.s. any recommendations for a 400-500w UPS (something just long enough for the server to power itself down)? I do have a concern with a UPS though, my server is on top of a wood cabinet so I'm somewhat concerned with a UPS being a fire hazard -- what would be the likelihood and worst case scenario outcomes of a sudden power failure (without a UPS)?
