I would like to set up a SOCKS proxy server in my home server (OS ver. 11.1-U4). There's a few available that have a lot of features, but I just need a basic thing that can pass traffic from computers external to my home LAN, without access to the LAN. I want to use SOCKS protocol because I like the idea of being able to sit down at any computer and just add the config to the browser without installing software. Authentication would also be a plus, so that any rando with my url can't start using it.

Is there any software available that fits the bill? I've tried setting up Privoxy, but I'm struggling to get it to actually pass traffic from other computers for some reason.

Use a SOCKS5 proxy. It runs through SSH so your communication is secure between host and client. It's easy to setup and there isn't any extra stuff to install except for PuTTY if using on a Windows client.
