I am running Freenas 9.10.2 virtualized in ESXi 6.5. Twice now in the last 3 months or so, suddenly I lose access to my NFS share.. and when I go check my VM console it says "ATA status: 41 (DRDY ERR), error: 02 (NM )"

I completely lose access to the Freenas web UI and have to force a power down on the VM when this happens.

Can anyone explain what this error means so I at least know where to start? I've seen similar errors but I can't find any others that match this exactly.

This suggests a failing drive.

Assuming you have VT-d working correctly, please paste the output of smartctl -a /dev/ada1 using the [ code ] tags.

Smartctl didn't show much info.. not sure where it is getting that 17.1GB number from either

Code:
[root@freenas ~]# smartctl -a /dev/ada1
smartctl 6.5 2016-05-07 r4318 [FreeBSD 10.3-STABLE amd64] (local build)

ada1 isn't one of my disks

My setup:

VMware on USB
FreeNAS on 2x USB
6x 4TB HDD, 2x 256GB SSD on onboard SATA
Entire onboard sata controller passed through to FreeNAS (Intel Wellsburg AHCI Controller)
2x SSD mirrored, shared back to ESXi over a storage network (to store other VMs)
6x HDD in RAIDz2

Anyone have an idea? This happened again .. it's driving me nuts, the server goes tits up out of nowhere. Can't make much sense of the error, and I'm not even sure what ada1 is if all my disks are ada2-9

ada1 is probably your boot drive

Not sure how to define boot drive in this scenario.. but all I have are USB flash drives aside from ada2-9 in freenas. VMware on USB, FreeNAS on 2xUSB
