I forgot to mention what I need this server for

Mainly for Sickbeard, Coatch potato, Plex, sanbznd.

Store all movies, tv shows

Serve files over the home network.

Backup all important files like family pictures and videos.

I'm serving all the files through plex mostly on gbox

Thanks

Sounds ok, but if performance with all that going on is below expectations, add 16GB of RAM.

Thanks Eric

I was thinking to purchase 32gb. Forgot to mention

What raid should I be using with this 7 x 3tb hard drives? I think I have another 4TB as well that I can create another backup to from my main raid.

For you use case, either RAIDz2 or RAIDz3.

RAIDZ3 fits nicely, but RAIDZ2 would also work, especially with compression.
