Is this a good value? Am I better off waiting until black Friday? Seems like these were cheaper in 2020 (Amazon WD 12TB Elements Desktop Hard Drive, USB 3.0 - WDBWLG0120HBK-NESN - $174.99). I am wondering if I should wait...

I would like to upgrade my storage and this seems like the sweet spot. How can I tell if this Elements unit has the right drives in it? Are there model numbers I should look for or avoid?

Before the chia craze the rule of thumb was anything under $15/T was a good price. You remember those threads. We're now seeing prices coming again into that range. So $220 for 12T is not great. I did 14s for $200 about six months ago. But I'd be wary of dodgy sellers on Newegg.

I think folks have mostly found CMR drives in Elements/Easystores at 8T and above, SMR below that. All spinning at 7200 but derated to 5400 "class".

What I am hearing is to sit tight until Black Friday and see if there is either a great deal on drives or elements. Fair?
