So my question is this, my brother in law gave me an old dell and I'm thinking about making it a homemade NASbox. When I tried to boot up the computer it has a password on it which I do not have and neither does my brother (he works for a college and the computer was one from a lab or something). I am wondering if I try to install FreeNAS, will I need to find that password, or does freenas act as an OS so it won't matter. Sorry if this is a dumb question, I'm new to doing much over just using computers for general everyday stuff. And help would be appreciated.

FreeNAS is an OS....

Yeah, based on the simplicity of your question(no offense) you aren't ready to get into FreeNAS yet.
