Since it's a "pool for VM storage", I'd look at 6 sets of mirrors striped together. Or, 4 sets of 3-way mirrors.

I needed more space than a "RAID10" could provide, though. I was between a varying RAIDZ2 config, or "RAID50" with 4 RAIDZ1's, which is what I went with ultimately.
