I followed the same procedure as my 8.3.1 install of freenas by finding the driver kernel extension, mounting / as rw, copying file to /boot/modules/, moving / back to r and adding the tunable to load the driver.

What has changed that prevents the driver module from loading? I get:

kldload: can't load /boot/modules/vmxnet3.ko: Exec format error

Yeah.. not everything has vmxnet3 drivers... why don't you just save yourself some grief and add a virtual intel nic instead??

There was some performance gain in my configuration with vmxnet3 vs the virtual intel NIC. There was also other features that weren't supported on the intel virtual NIC which I don't remember off the top of my head, possibly vlan and jumbo frame if I remember.
