I have a couple SuperMicro 3u servers identical with freenas 8.3 booting from (USB). Each server has (4) 1GB nics & 8GB RAM. Looking for ideas on replicating a VMware 4.1x + infrastructure. So far we set up (2) 1GB NIC's using lagg0 and lacp on the switch. The vmware box is a dell r710 also with 4 nics. (2) are for the storage network configured in a static trunk.

As far as NFS, what is the common practice for dataset design? Do you recommend a dataset for each VM? Customer and export those out as NFS mounts ? I'm curious how others are designing their datapools with ZFS in use.

Thanks!

Last time I checked ESX NFS best practices are the same regardless of what OS the backend is running. All the generic NFS questions should be answered by that.

For ZFS specific things with VMs I suggest you read & understand ticket #1531. You will also want to look into using a mirrored SLOG. ESX NFS clients request sync with every request or close enough.
