If your are more familiar with kvm try Proxmox.
It works right out of the box and have the abililty to do backups.

I wondered about this statement too, opinion is Proxmox with FreeNAS as a VM with HBA passthrough for attached disks can work according to various forum posts.

The question for @Shockwaver is whether their focus is virtualisation or zfs pool? If the intention is to purchase new hardware to support ECC, then you could run proxmox on one host and FreeNAS as a storage server only on a second machine. Others would argue zfs on linux has reached a point where Proxmox is all you need.
