Hi Everyone, been looking at this https://static.ixsystems.co/uploads...m_Backup__Replication_Whitepaper_2020_WEB.pdf dated white paper and wondering if there is anything new to consider. Reading in the forum here... seeing some mixed solutions, suggestions... obviously there are lots of networks and they all need specific solutions. Realizing 1 size doesn't fit all.

I'm working with what I have, that's an X9 system with max room for 12x 3.5 drives connected via HBA and an expander. My host is a Dell Server running Hyper-V 19 with DAS. Current Veeam target is a Dell Server with DAS running Windows 2012R2, which is going EOL in Oct. Backing up 15 VMs, totally backup size around 1.5TB.

For testing right now, I have 6x3.5 in a RAIDZ2, one SMB share and one iSCSI target mounted on the Backup server VM (2012R2), formatted with REFS 64K.

Read a post by the grinch that using RAIDZ kills IOPS and is not recommended. So how to configure those 12 drives? Right now its RAIDZ2 and across iSCSI I'm nearly saturating the 10GB Nic with 802MB/s backups, the SMB isn't too far behind that. However, grinch has mentioned that that will degrade in time till it's dead? So then what's the correct setup as even the white paper recommends this setup.

Slight clarification. In creating a Pool, with 1 or 2 VDEV of 5-6 disks, which setting should I use for the VDEV? Better off with 6 disks and a single VDev or 2 VDev? What jgreco said about RAIDZ weighting heavy on my mind... its runs counter to some other posts...but if he said it, there is a good reason.

ps- how do I shorten my signature into a box?
