To answer both of your replies, thank you, the IOPS makes more sense now and of course I cannot change the laws of physics haha, but it gives me a better understand of what I'm up against. I have been looking at what I'd need to make it work like I want to, and it's just unnecessary cost for what you mention, it is indeed low-end and I am in much higher need of storage space rather than a editing-capable machine. This at least makes my external ssds still a better option for the moment, and I can invest the money in more storage space rather than chasing speed. That dream will have to come in a few years time when it is really necessary.

Would you be able to confirm this product will be okay for my needs? Not sure if there's some hidden or small print that I don't know of that doesn't actually work for what I need it to/isn't compatible whatever.

Thank you both again, your input has been tremendously helpful so far.

I only see mention of Windows Server versions in the supported OS list there.

Not to say it can't possibly work, but I wouldn't stray from Intel cards if it were me.

You may be able to find some single port 10G SPF+ cards from Intel if you look around a bit.
Thanks, do I understand correctly that something like this is what you're referring to? Mentioning the Intel X520-DA1 despite being a different brand? I didn't notice the other one was missing that.

You should really stick to Intel or Chelsio. Other brands may work or kind-of work. But it is always a risk and not worth the time. You can get X520 used pretty cheap from reputable suppliers. Look out for companies that sell used enterprise gear. I got mine for 50 Euros each incl. transceivers (just as an example).

Thanks, I understand. I'll ask some people I know if they'd be able to source that for me. If not, does this look like a good option?

Overall all of these I saw come from Chinese sellers, some US ones too but postage is way too high or it doesn't ship to the UK. I might try my luck with the amazon one, I can always return it, before buying from ebay and waiting weeks for delivery. Anything special within cables? I might get away with something like 1 metre, so probably go for DAC instead of fibre (if I understood the difference correctly). Thanks.

I would personally (!) not buy something like this from China, but that is an individual risk assessment. There should be a bunch of UK-based companies that sell used enterprise gear. I would start with Google and then also look on eBay. Perhaps it would be helpful to create a separate thread where you ask people for recommendations. After all, this is now deeply buried in the thread ...

I'm not a fan of buying from China either. I found some UK sellers after posting that so I'll have a look at those, I'll leave the link here so you can see if it is correct but I notice it's SFP not SFP+. And yes I suppose you're right about the thread, but I have a good idea know of what to get and do so probably won't need more advice for now.

This one is more expensive but seems like the proper NIC

In any case, your help has been very needed so thank you! To everyone!

Hundreds of post facilities around the world work off of shared storage. They've been doing it for decades. There is no way around it when you outgrow your garage shop.
