Hi,

I try to use my samba share as source for videos playing via vlc.
Unfortenatly this is more a slideshow an damn slow.

The network is fast enough and the server cpu is bored as the client cpu is too.

Does someone have an idea, what the problem might be? I dont know.
The network traffic goes up and down in glitches (is this right in english?) as to see in the attached image.

What are your full system hardware specs, and build of FreeNAS? Also, Plex is a great tool for streaming media from the NAS box.

Freenas version, freenas hardware specs, client hardware specs, network layout? You need to actually describe your problem and setup if you want help.

Ok, to make it more clear, here is more information:
Frenas Setup:
Network: 100MBit LAN, Only the Freenas and the client connected
Client: openSuse, core i5, 4 GB RAM

When I copy files from or to the Samba Share, performance is ok:
Copy CIFS.jpeg

My thougt is, that it is a configuration problem. Perhaps in the samba client or in VLC.
Its a common use of a NAS, to have videos there and play them from a share. So I hope that someone had that problem an knows how to solve it.

Does someone have an idea?

If I recall VLC has issues playing media from a network share. I fought with this on my FreeBSD desktop for some time and gave up on it. Not sure if this has been fixed in a newer version but it doesn't look like it.

Yup, its defaults aren't appropriate for reading media from network (maybe on low-latency 10GbE...). I'm sure it's possible to fiddle with them somehow, but I have no idea how to do it.

If you copy the file locally it plays nicely?

Yes, it plays without problems when it´s stored on the local disk. I tried it with several different mp4 and flv files. Allways the same -> no problem on local disk, but not viewable on the share.

But it seems to be a problem with vlc not freenas or samba.
When I try the same with XINE Player it works well for me.
I will try it with my raspberry (kodi). I hope it works well there to.
