I'm trying to set my box files/folders structure to arrange family members sharing it's space for their individual and common needs. And I wander what is a real advantage of 1) having each user assigned a home directory instead of /nonexistent, and 2) having those home directories arranged under one mnt/pool/home dataset?? I've read in threads it is FreeBSD convention, but why it is and if it is applicable to FreeNAS?

Yes, since I do not understand why individual user datasets under mnt/pool could be better I would probably stay with recommended layout with mnt/pool/home dataset as "home dataset" and simple folders within it as "home directories" for users. Will see how it works. Another question: since permissions are the attributes of datasets (photos, documents, etc.), and not attributes of sharing as a service, shall I share entire mnt/pool rather then arrange each datataset shared individually. There will be mnt/pool/jails and mnt/pool/iocage datasets visible for ordinary users, but they will have no write access, so can's screw up. It would be better to hide them though.
