Usb stick performance effect

Hi, I am building my first nas/private storage/will test virtual computer with scale.

I understand I should not install os on usb stick for longevity. But I will.

I have so many sticks but very few harddrives atm.

Will this impact os and app performance?

Ps. Thanks to all the developers. Hard to think this amazing os is free

Best regards,

Flamur

Not really. Definitely not app performance, as the apps live on your pool and really don't interact with the boot device. Booting will be a bit slower, but you don't ordinarily boot the server very often anyway. ZFS caching means most of the OS is going to live in RAM most of the time, so the boot device doesn't have much impact there.

Ok glad to hear that and many thanks for your help

I read this for core:
"Move system dataset to the main array and this will remove virtually all write IO from your boot drive."

How would I go about and do that in scale? Or is that not the same in core and scale?

(I am trying to read the guide/manual - but its a lot of extra googleing/learning for me so I loose track and wander about on the internet while trying to do that.)

It happens as soon as you set up your first pool. Not sure if it happens if you import an existing pool, but if you set up a new pool, that pool also becomes your system dataset

Aha ok thanks :) I only have my one SSD in the nas now so that was also my first pool. So then I guess it is as I want already.

You can chheck the location - System Settings / Advanced / Storage

I forgot to confirm that the system dataset indeed is on the SSD pool and thanks for all help in this thread :) Running the OS on three usb sticks that I guess uses some RAID to keep it somewhat safe atleast.

I am happy to have added a 4tb mirror pool to try set up some kind of storage system. The journey has started.
