Hey Everyone,

I am slowly working on getting my TrueNas Core build up and running .. I currently have one data pool that I would like to backup to an ext usb drive ..

I set up the following replication job but I don't think its working right as the ext usb drive is showing up as empty and it should be almost full I would think ..

I am trying to back up what I call "Computer Core" currently its 6tb worth of data , the ext usb drive is 7tb .. So maybe its to small to do weekly backups ..

Anyways looking for advice and help .. Thanks as always ..

Do you see any errors reported wither on the task status or in the dashboard on the bell at the top right?

You need to check that little [ ] recursive checkbox. Otherwise there probably is nothing to back up right at the top level of your pool. At least it's not recommended to put anything in there.

Just a guess. All my tasks are working flawlessly. But I never start a replication task at the pool root directory. Try to go one level below and only replicate one top level dataset, not the pool root.

Hey Patrick,

Do you mean click on each of the folders ? I am confused .. All I want is a way to back everything up to a ext usb drive ..

Yes, just try a single folder/dataset first. The documentation states that you should not place files and folders in the top of your pool but create at least one sub-dataset. E.g. in the new pool create a dataset named "share", then all your shared datasets beneath that. Then you can snapshot and replicate the "share" dataset recursively.

Just a try - I do not know if full pool replication is supposed to work or not.

Hey Patrick,

I don't know either .. I am very new to TrueNas Core .. So I am doing my best to learn it ..

Sadly that didn't work ..

I unchecked computer core and then went and checked the MP3 folder .. ran it and gave me an error about "replication from scratch is not allowed" so I went back in and checked that box and ran it again .. the second time it gave me "does not have any matching snapshots to replicate"

So I am confused .. because in the windows world replication means , we will replicate this whole folder to its location .. so snapshots are getting me confused ..

All I want to to backup the computer core all the files and everything to my ext usb drive .. if there is another way to do that I am all for it I just thought it would be a replication task as I don't see any options for "backup data" ..

You need to adapt the snapshot task to just one dataset, too.

As I said - guesswork. We are testing things. If it works with a single dataset but doesn't for the entire pool, you can create a bug ticket in JIRA ...

Again: it is advised in the documentation not to put data on <poolname> but to create at least one dataset <poolname>/<something>. In the Windows world you do not put your data on C:\ either. You put it in C:\Users\patrick or some such. And backup that ...

Hey Patrick,

I think I might have gotten it to work .. I deleted everything and started over and it seems to have worked .. but as I haven't figure out how to change the date yet everything is going to on sunday night ..

So I am waiting to see what happens ..

but what I don't understand is when you look at the pool .. the computer core is 6tb used and the backup pool says like 2.5tb used .. I would think they should be the same or close to it .. So not sure if I am doing it right or not ..
