You can't. All you can get are nightly reports. It's an issue that will be resolved in 9.0 per info in another thread.

The scrub has completed, with no errors. I'm now running SMART long tests on all the disks.

I did smartctl -a on all the disks, and 2 of the drives have high seek and read error rates.

I'm guessing these should probably be replaced ASAP?

Yeah, you haven't heard from me because everything seems to be OK!
Eventually all the disks finished their SMART tests and returned no errors.
After resilvering all the data seems to be back.
I upgraded to 8.2; scheduled weekly scrubs.
I'm still not sure what happened; I believe one or two disks got dislodged or disconnected.

I have yet to hear from anyone with a 'firm' answer regarding whether it is 'safe' for our data to have a hot-spare configured.

PLEASE, always report back to a forum if things have gone well, not just when you need the help. Lots of people went out of their way to assist you in your panicy times - it's good etiquette to provide them with a followup.

Good to hear everything is still there, though. I'm also often frustrated by (Free)NAS systems, but ZFS really is proving itself more and more as being super resilient.

The safest thing to do is buy a new case and move all your hard drives internal. That way no one will come along and accidentally disconnect them.

I don't think there's a "best" answer to your question. I prefer to have complete control on swapping disks. Last thing I want is for the zpool to do a bunch of "automatic" things thinking it knows best and lose my data.

Personally, I run RAIDZ2 and I check my logs every morning when I wake up. As long as they don't show degraded I'm not too worried. I do check the scrub after completion to make sure one drive doesn't have a boatload of errors and that SMART is looking good. The odds are pretty small that I'll see 3 drives fail since I'm very attentive to what is going on with my FreeNAS servers.
