Hello,

I have FreeNAS-8.0.4-RELEASE-p1-x86 (11059) trying to upgrade to 9.2.1.5. I have confirmed that I have a good 9.2.1.5 x86 iso by checking the SHA256 number. I burned the CD disk using Disk-at-once.

I follow the direction from the Upgrading FreeNas guide from doc.freenas.org.
When I confirm to upgrade I get this error:

-install_worker2.sh: ERROR: could not load the avatar.conf file from the destination directory (/var/tmp/data/etc)
-The FreeNAS upgrade on ada3 has failed. Press any key to continue...

I looked up the directory on the machine and /var/tmp exist but there is no sub-directory data or etc.
How do I fix this problem?

Thanks

Computer Specs:
Dell GX280
Intel Pentium 4 2.8 GHz
RAM 4 GB DDR2
SAMSUNG CD-ROM SC-148A B403 is IDE
40 GB Western Digital SATA Hard Drive <- FreeNAS 8.0.4 installed; ada3
Fasttrak TX4310 PCI Raid Card
- 2 Seagate 1TB SATA hard drives in Raid 1(same model number); ada0 and ada2

1) specs of your machine are subpar
2) not even close to enough ram

Sorry, forgot to mention that my file system is UFS, if that makes any difference.

Yes UFS does make a difference. Don't try to upgrade straight to 9.2.1.5. Do it in stages and take your time.

Search the forum for another reply by me in the last couple of days. I explained it to another user who was trying to upgrade from 8.0.4.

If you do not have a complicated configuration you would be best to take another USB Flash drive and load FreeNAS 9.2.1.3 on it and then do the reconfiguring and import the UFS drives. This method allows you to easily return to 8.0.4 if you have issues.

Sorry, I forgot to update.
I managed to upgrade to 9.2.0 by following gpsguy post.
8.04 -> 8.2 -> 8.3.2 -> 9.2.0
Funny thing is that when I tried to upgrade to 9.2.1.5, for some reason I lost my Internet connection.
It looked I lost the network card driver.
I tried upgrading back to 9.2.0 but that did not restore network connections.
I then tried doing a fresh install of 9.2.0 and that restored the network connections.
I was then able to upload the config file.
So for now I have 9.2.0 working.

Perhaps FreeNAS dropped support for your NIC, since the hardware is so old. Short of buying all new hardware, a cheap solution would be to buy an Intel Pro/1000 NIC. Cost for an OEM version is about $30 USD.
