Update / plugin recovery

Made the mistake of trying to upgrade with the update button and it failed. Need to upgrade from 9.2. to 9.3. Plan is to do a fresh install on a new USB stick but I have some questions:
1) I took a backup after Plex didn't update. Did I still capture all of the settings for Plex?
2) Is there anything I should manually go into the Plex jail and recover?
3) Any other pitfalls, gotcha's, or best practices to look at when doing an upgrade in this manner?

Ok, tried to upgrade to 9.3 by doing a fresh install on a 2nd USB stick so I can always fall back to 9.2 if necessary. Only problem is 9.3 installer doesn't recognize USB drive. Originally had installed the installer on the drive, then burned to a cd and booted. Computer bios sees the thumb drive, but once the installer starts it doesn't show it as one of the drives to install to. Any suggestions?
