1. go back to 9.3 boot environment with a working 9.3 configuration

2. update to 9.10 in the gui - this will update your boot disc to 9.10 and update your configuration file to 9.10

If I just go back to 9.3 boot environment, it will be a clean install on a USB drive and the only saved config files are the updated ones with 9.10.
So if it's 9.3 then it means me starting all over again.

that's the latest build on 9.10 - the same i am on. what failed to update then?

don't take this the wrong way - i advise everyone to read the manual.

also i have a script which backs up my configuration file daily - then if there is a problem and i can restore my configuration from any given day.

This is all it says about what failed: CRITICAL: May 22, 2016, 9:48 a.m. - Update failed. Check /data/update.failed for further details.
And then I posted all the said detail which meant nothing.

This is all I could find which did make some sense: ! Error found during real run of migration! Aborting.

Not not taken the wrong way, and yes I do read the manual but albeit only bits a time

Just thinking about what to do now and I'm screwed if I don't upgrade from 9.3 to 9.10, as I'll probably still get the status error again on both Boot and Disks , status, and I'm screwed if I do upgrade like I have now.

How come the status gives an error in 9.3, as I don't recall it doing so before, els I would stick with 9.3 for a while longer.

Just watching the upgrade from 9.3 to 9.10, and the errors or failures are :

Status.ReplicationStatusAlert object at 0x80ba4c690 failed: no such column: storage_replication.repl_resetonce

As an example of what has failed
